1.8 TSI engine starts with adittional noise

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm having a strange noise when engine starts on my O3 mk3 1.8 TSI 4x4 DSG 2015.

It sounds like an adittional start of something and a knocking noise.

I dissasembled and cleaned the starter, but its the same noise that appears after the car rests for few hours, especially in the morning.

I was told that it could be the timing chain or accesories from this.

Could be a problem or its a normal noise?

Anyone can give me an advice?

I have also a video.

Thanks.

Do you mean the sound at 0:08 seconds? if yes, I heard someone else mentioning oil pump.

Yes, its the sound at 0.08 sec. When i made revision with oil change at the engine few days ago, they didnt told me anything about oil pump and i have no errors with VCDS.

The whole thing other than the starter motor sounds like a bag of spanners!  There sounds like something thumping / banging at 12 / 13 seconds and happens a few times. The audio if all thrashy and distorted and cuts in and out, not sure if that's the phone audio or representative of some of the other sounds happening.

The issues seem to start at the mileage shown at your video too.

Thanks for your reply. This was the only explanation from service, that could be the timing belt tensioner.

Some will say it is a normal noise, but i really dont know if it is neccesary to change timing chain and accesories at 91k km, only because of this noise.

Someone told me that he also has this noise with an O3 2016 1.4 TSI from 15k km. Now he has 60k km.

The sound at 8 seconds is the same as my Golf has done since new (2018 2.0 TSI), is the same as my previous vRS did since new (2015 2.0 TSI), and is the same as my Wife's Polo GTI does (2015 1.8 TSI).  It was explained to me that it's the sound made as an oil rail fills.

I suppose it all depends on whether you can live with the noise or whether you wish to put on the improved cam-chain tensioner/improve cam-chain and how long you want to keep the car for.

I have O3 1.4 TSI 2013, and today I specifically noticed to see if mine has this or no, and surprisingly mine also does have it. It should probably be normal as others also pointed. I never noticed myself before reading here.

But that doesn't make an awful lot of sense.

If the noise wasn't there at manufacture, something has changed.  Also, when they say oil rail fills presumably, they mean hydraulic tensioner fills, that pushes on a tensioning rail, that keeps the chain tight.  And the hydraulic tensioner is supposed to have a rathchet, which takes up the slack when there is no hydraulic pressure, so there should be no period where the chain is loose and noisey for that reason. If it is loose, it would be at risk of slipping teeth and could indicate the tensioner is faulty.

Ultimately, if the noise is widespread in those gen engines after a few thousand kms, and hasn't resulted in widely reported meltdowns, I guess it comes down to either i) putting up or ii) paying for some investigation and remedial action.

FWIW, in the mk2 threads I have just uploaded my EA888 gen 2 at start up and it does not sound like the recording in this thread to my ears anyway.

Edit: @Gaz_ Is it possibly the initial Whirr noise at startup that completely fades inside about a second at 8 seconds that you are commenting on?  I have heard that on other vehicles and I think I have heard it on mine, on occasion?

I agree both points.

My point was observational, and as my cars were bought new, they both went straight back to Skoda and VW respectively, who both gave the same explanation and re-assured me nothing was wrong.  My concerns were noted though (which was my main  intention).

If it wasn't there before, but is now, then it'd probably be best to have it investigated, in case it's something more serious, as you and Max have indicated.  The audio quality after the initial whirr doesn't sound great and there's obviously no substitute for actually being there with the car to hear it.
