2000 1.9 sdi fabia not charging

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm new here. I have a 2000 1.9 sdi fabia, the battery  light comes on car won't start without  a jump, even with a fully charged battery. When running battery light comes on and goes off and beeps but no charge at all. Dose it sound  like an alternator fault? Be greatfull  for any help.

First thing I would do, is check the battery to see if one of the cells has gone bad.

You may need a new battery.

How old is the battery?

The fact that you can start the engine with a jump start would suggest that it's the battery.

Hi guys so the battery is not charging at all, battery light comes on with the ignition but still won't start. But it will start when jumped. The battery light goes on and off when car is running. So do u guys think the alternator is first port of call to change?  Many thanks

Have you checked that the alternator fuse isn't broken? Strip fuse no.1 in fuseholder above battery.

Ok will look when I get home. How many  fuses are supposed to be in the fusebox  above battery?  I've just bought  this with the charging  issue. From what I can remember  there's only about two fuses in there and they look small amp fuses. Many thanks

Take a photo of what there is and post it in here.  Usually about 4/5/6 strip fuses and then about 3 or 4 blade fuses under a cover to the right of the strip fuses.

Do the batteries discharge quickly if you leave the car sit? Check the date on the battery, if its more than a few years old its probably your culprit. The 1.9 sdi is a big heavy chunk of an engine so it needs a good big battery to start it.

Check both batteries disconnected from the car.

What voltage do they both read 12 hours after you have charged them up? (You need to wait 12 hours to check for a bad cell, as the voltage will drop rapidly in a bad cell after 12 hours from when it was charged).

Do they have between 12.4V and 12.7V 12 hours after you have charged them up?

What Ah rating do they have?

What CCA rating do they have?

Varta recommend one of these two batteries for the Skoda Fabia MK1 1.9SDi

https://www.varta-automotive.com/en-gb/battery-finder?type=pc&year=2000&make=106&model=4383&engine=13364&etn=577+400+078|574+012+068|&rec_etn=574+012+068|&ss_etn=&literal_search={"type"%3A"Passenger+Car"%2C"year"%3A"2000"%2C"make"%3A"SKODA"%2C"model"%3A"FABIA+I+(6Y2)"%2C"engine"%3A"1.9+SDI+(47+kW+%2F+64+PS)"}

You can see that they are both have dimensions of Width 175mm, Height 190mm, Length 278mm.

These are big batteries.

The silver one has a 77Ah capacity, and a CCA 780A rating.

The 780A rating is an important rating, as this is the amount of current that the battery is able to supply.

Your two old batteries might not be able to supply anywhere near 780Amps.

780A is almost 15% more than 680A, which is what the lower rated blue version is.

It looks like there was initially a triple thread post from the OP so one has been removed and the others combined and moved to the correct forum.
