Multiple Faults?

Featured Replies

I had 'Christmas lights', six of them, on the dials. Suggested culprits ASR, ESC, ABS, TPM +2

(Manual P36 - 'In the event of an ABS fault, the other braking and stability systems are turned off'

AA Roadside plugged in and showed NSR ABS fault. Continuing journey cautiously lights went out only to come back following day, only to go out again en route to dealer to fix. Luckily photos taken when warning lights were up.

Sensor replaced, no further issue. AA and dealer confirmed similar issues recorded across VAG range (shared component)

Hi All,

Just an update on this issue.

I managed to speak to a friend who has VCDS today.

We managed to plug things in to take a peek at the error faults shown. There are quite a few faults, and it seems that some I believe are related to the recent issue as per this thread; whilst others might be historical?

It seems like I have a speed sensor issue on the front left. It just states "electrical fault in circuit"? Not sure if this simply translates to a faulty speed sensor that just needs replacing.

Here is a summary of the all the faults found (and full details below).

Could someone kindly have a scan across these, and let me know if my assumption is correct as per below?

Many thanks!

Address 03: ABS Brakes (J104)  => Current issue based on wheel speed sensor

Address 10: Park/Steer Assist (J791) => Assume is related to ABS Brakes i.e. Wheel speed sensor

Address 22: AWD => Assume is related to ABS Brakes i.e. Wheel speed sensor

Address 44: Steering Assist => Assume is related to ABS Brakes i.e. Wheel speed sensor

Address 02: Auto Trans => Assume is related to ABS Brakes i.e. Wheel speed sensor

Address 01: Engine (J623-CFHC) => Not sure what this one is, maybe historical?
Address 37: Navigation (J0506) => Assume is historical? (my navigations works fine just now?)

Address 56: Radio (J0506) => Assume is historical? (my radio works fine just now?)

I had exactly the same issue on my Octavia - electrical fault in circuit, and one of the wires to the ABS sensors had become damaged and broken the wire.

Have a good look around the wheel arches at the wiring before thinking about replacing ABS sensors.

I appreciate that  vcds is a useful tool.in the right hands but from a layman's point of view would an obd reader not be as useful and would give an error code showing which speed sensor was faulty without bringing up other spurious faults . I am thinking about purchasing an obd reader  any advice on this would be appreciated

If it just a occassional hobby interest, then you could do no worse that ODBeleven.  More serious tinkering (changing settings) - consider VCDS.

re: odderties about faults.

Low batteries voltages will cause instabilities in the CANBUS network (which - for those old enough to remember is like the old Coaxial 10Base2 networks, although running at higher speeds).  This will - in turn - come up with spurious errors as modules fail to report their status correct, because their voltage levels are low....anything less than 11.8V, your car will not really operate correctly [electrically].  Not always failing batteries - COVID means that the cars are standing idle for long periods of time; invest in a decent trickle battery charger.

I assume from your comment, that the wiring can be replaced as a separate part? I assumed that the ABS sensor was hardwired, so if the wiring was damaged you'd have to replace the full unit i.e. sensor with wiring.

I'll try and have a good look.

The sensor is not hard wired, it is a separate part.

The wiring loom for each abs sensor can be replaced, and can be bought as a spare part from Skoda

Thanks that good to know.

I guess if the wiring is damaged? then it would certainly be a cheaper and easier fix to unplug and replace the relevant wiring loom.

Will have a look at the car tomorrow in the daylight. I assume access to view the area of the wiring is still possible without having to remove the wheel etc? (front left according to the logs)

In my experience no, if you are really lucky it might show up a generic OBDII code for braking system, ABS etc but definitely not the detailed specific VAG fault codes contained in the relevant modules.

Another example, the airbag light comes on, a generic OBDII reader will tell you what you already know, there is a fault in the airbag system, VCDS will tell you that the drivers door crash sensor or the passenger seat airbag has an open circuit or short to ground, intermittent signal from steering wheel airbag (clockspring) failure to communicate with airbag control module etc etc etc.

Had a quick  peek behind the wheel this afternoon.

I assume the highlighted cable and attached sensor is the ABS sensor and corresponding wiring?

The wiring itself looks intact and no obvious damage. I assume it could still be an issue with the sensor itself.

Think i'll contact one or two garages for a quote. What is the expected labour/cost on the assumption its sensor replacement (i.e. £100-200?)

Agreed, the stop start system seemed to be stopping less and less frequently, I was advised by service manager to get a CTEC charger/ conditioner because most of us are not doing enough miles during lockdown to keep battery in peak condition. I now put it on charge every couple of weeks, it usually 'charges' for a couple of hours then goes to Condition. Stop start back to normal and everything else is good. I guess with infrequent short journeys battery is not fully charged - particularly with seat heaters, rear and front screen heaters and lighting on for most journeys of no more than 20 minutes.

If it's just the sensor, and you can get the wheel off and jack the car up safely, you can easily change them yourself.

It's only one bolt that holds them in, but they tend to be very stuck in place. Plusgas or similar releasing agent is very handy for that sort of thing.

I had similar indications a couple of years ago on the offside rear sensor, I unplugged the sensor cable at the sensor end ie bottom left in the photo and squirted some some switch/contact cleaner on the plug and socket , remade the connection tried the car, problem solved, split the joint and used some vaseline  on it, subsequently problem free!!

Might  be worth a try.

Had another speed wheel sensor fitted to test, and unfortunately it didn't resolve my issue. So looks like its not the sensor at fault.

Car going back in next week to review the wiring further...

I guess the log that i previously had suggested its most likely some wiring/circuit issue?

i.e.

00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left  (G47)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

Is the internal wiring easy to get access to?
