is my handbrake sticking?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I've had a search but still need to ask - sometimes (usually if I haven't driven it for a few days), as I pull off out of my drive after releasing the handbrake, there is a resistance to moving and then a bit of a bump as I then suddenly move off. Would that be the handbrake sticking?

Thanks for any advice

Usually you will hear a crack as the pads break free from the discs if the car has sat with the handbrake applied.

Assuming the cables and calipers are in good serviceable condition, keep things moving by using the handbrake frequently on hill start/traffic scenarios instead of burning up the clutch and select 1st gear before parking for extended periods instead of using the handbrake.

Thanks MicMac - so it's pretty normal?

Yes, have a look before setting off.  If the discs have a coating of rust and the handbrake has been left applied for an extended period it's reasonable to expect things to have become stuck.

If you have concerns regarding the operation of the handbrake e.g. lever feels slack, rear brakes are unusually hot/smell of burning then have a professional check things for you.

Yeah, completely normal, and usually worse when its been raining.
