Converting headlights from LHD to RHD

Featured Replies

Hi,

Been looking to retrofit some projectors into my standard headlights but I know I won’t be happy with the outcome for the amount of effort it’ll take.

I like these lights currently on eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Projector-Headlights-Lamps-LHD-Angel-Eyes-Ccfl-Black-For-Skoda-Fabia-I-07-/372387966345?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

These are LHD and I can’t find anything similar for RHD cars.

Has anybody converted these or something similar to RHD and can offer me any advice?
Or is there anyone who builds custom headlights similar to the ones on eBay?

Getting sick of my historic crappy headlights 😁

All show and no go, polish your headlight lenses properly, you'd be amazed at the difference and you'll save a fortune.

If thats the worst that you currently have to contend with then consider yourself fortunate.

I dont care what my headlights look like, its not as if I can see them when they are doing their job.

I can't tell if he really can't see where he's going or if he's trying to put lipstick on the pig.

Appreciate the replies. I am in fact trying to pretty the pig. Headlights are bright enough to see all I need to see.

I like the look of the ‘angel eye’ projector headlights off eBay, hence why I linked those specific lights. I were querying advice on how to convert headlights from LHD to RHD :)

I have an idea how to do them myself and I’m not afraid to split the new lights to diy them. I’d like to know if anyone on here has done it with similar lights and their experience with doing it.

Cheers

I can give you chapter and verse regarding RHD to LHD conversions on older headlights with P45 (I think) dual element main & dipped beam bulbs but know nothing of the optics on projector headlights other than the ones on my MK2 Octavia were completely useless even with brand new LHD units.

Editted, I can recall a significant detail now I have thought about it, there was a small shaped aluminium shield inside the units which masked the light output to give the correct dipped beam cut off, the LHD headlights had the same but a mirror image, had I been able to get them apart & modify it I am fairly sure it would have worked but as the light output was so pathetic I decided to buy the correct new ones as they were quite cheap.

The output from them was just as crap, my Yeti with standard halogen headlights is a thousand times better.

If they are anything like the OEM lights you might find an aluminium shield on the projector bowl as mentioned by J.R above.

Now, don't hold me to this, but simply swapping this around through 180 degrees might change the LHD to a RHD cut off.

This pic is from a genuine RHD OEM projector. Look closely & you'll see the stepped cut off towards to centre.

The holes line up to allow the plate to be flipped over.

Or, you may find they have a lever that you can flick to flatten the LHD "kick."

The lever is in the pic at the 8 o'clock. Moving it moves part of the aluminium plate to eliminate the stepped bit.

Hope that makes sense, but remember I'm NOT confirming either will definitely work to change to RHD.

I am fairly sure that it will work, all the more so now having viewed your photos enlarged, all I had to go on was peering through the back of the bulbholder.

Mine did not look like they would come apart as normally I would have tried, do you have to slice through the sealant on the clear front cover?

On an OEM Xenon, the projector is accessible from the back. Although a couple of the four small nuts that need undoing are very fiddly.

A few more photos which may help

Our (UK, euro) headlights have a nearside kick in the shape of a shallow/obtuse/flattened V. The USA DoTA ones have "kinked" or "chicane" beam offset.

On the Fabia Xenons , to allow for continental driving, it's possible to "flatten" the beam output.... allegedly.

Still, those piccies would seem to confirm one thing. One can't refurb projectors by flipping them upside down simply. The bloody things aren't symmetrical.

The beam is flattened by moving the lever on the aluminium plate as mentioned in the earlier posts.

I suggested that by flipping the aluminium plate 180 degrees through it's centre axis, may change the kick to be the opposite way. I.e from RHD to LHD on UK Xenons & vice versa. (NB The lever that normally goes towards the rear of the haleadlight unit would then need to be bent back or removed as it would be pointing towards the lens. The holes of the plate align to allow this). The projector bowl itself would remain in it's normal orientation.

This is just a theory & may help the OP with his initial query about converting LHD projector units to RHD

All this palaver for a smudge of lipstick, incredible, just a reminder that the Fabia Mk 1 is TWENTY TWO years old now and all this effort to make it look shiny and new is probably being wasted.

Regarding spending £100s on whizzy lights with loose wires hanging out the back, I agree. Or to add copycat angel eyes or highlights in the shape of DRLs on some German brands.

This is the best advice of the lot

I had poor lights and I done this job and replaced the bulbs with Osram Nightbreakers - The difference in lighting for €40 was well worth it to me ! Not only that the car looks a lot fresher and smarter.

Its amazing that manufacturers spend millions on research, development and testing only to have some cowboys bosch up substandard parts in a shed and claim that they are better because they look better.  You might crack changing LHD to RHD and I have to give you all credit for working it out but to expect that there will be a big difference is somewhat optimistic.

Who are the cowboys you're referring too?

The OP was just after some advice & help which is what this forum was always about.

Having had issues with burnt out projectors in my OEM xenons, I had to look at my options. In removing & dismantling them I noticed a few things which I shared above.

The lads that build up the things from cheap substandard materials then try and sell them on unnamed online auction sites for exorbitant prices - Well it is business I appreciate that but you fellas are going to a lot of bother and I definitely have to give yous credit for getting stuck in - Im sorry if I didnt get that point across that it was the online retailer that is the cowboy not you fellas .....! If the retailer was any good then they would supply the proper stuff that you fellas wouldnt have to go stripping at....

I dont intend falling out with anybody but Its just my opinion that it might not turn out the way that you plan and you only find out after a truck load of cash is down the swanney .. Ive been there on many an occasion and I dont want you lads getting stung as well !

I think you've gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick, this forum is a great resource but when it comes to tuner bits this model is too old now to get any new stuff made, particularly in RHD which is a tiny little market, all the RHD stuff has run out and there won't be any more production runs.

Modifying LHD parts for a safety critical, MOT testable application like the headlights purely for cosmetic reasons doesn't make any sense on any level.

Another vote for Osram Night Breakers. I find them really good.

  • 1 year later...

or just do as i did and upgraded my bulbs to a higher spec and then used fly eye wrap on the headlights looks much nicer and perfectly road legal and mot pass.
