Now that the Karoq is available with the option of a USB connection in the rear view mirror, does anybody know whether the connection is always there, even if you do not select that option , if the wire is there it maybe possible to connect to it..

I dunno but can you specify a USB port on it's own? Not according to the configurators you can't. From what I saw on Kodiaq, you had to specify an upgraded camera the cheapest of which was traffic sign recognition at £75 or whatever.  If that's true, then that would suggest the power comes from the updated camera or it's supply.  If you order that, then my guess is there'd be some plug-in type module but it's a VERY expensive way to power the camera when you can easily use the traditional piggy-back type fuse for next to nowt.

Wiring looms are normally made for the exact vehicle spec these days with no extra wires for options not fitted.

I guess with just in time these days that makes sense, shame as could have hooked it straight into my dash cam..

Note that it's not a permanent live either, it goes on and off with the ignition, so if your dash cam has parking/sentry modes those won't work :(
