Flat Battery??

Featured Replies

Hey guys

I’m a new poster but watch and learn from the vast amount of questions etc. So hello to everyone 👋🏼

I have a 2014 1.4 Fabia VRS. I don’t drive it very far and it’s mainly town driving. My battery went flat a couple of weeks ago so I replaced it with the same one (Bosch 002).
I went to inflate my tyres this evening and the battery is completely flat again.
The alternator is fine as once it’s been started it holds some charge.

Anyone got any ideas to help me out?

Please, thank you 😊

If you put a voltmeter in the cigar lighter socket with the engine running, what voltage does it show?

Cigarette Lighter Voltmeter

If the voltmeter shows about 14.0V to 14.4V with the engine running, then your battery is being charged OK.

I don’t have one of those. Is there any known electrical faults with the Fab VRS, that you know of?

Maybe someone else could answer that question, as I don't have a Fabia vRS.

If you order that one from ebay today, you might receive it by next weekend. However, you can use a multimeter across the battery terminals when the engine is running to perform the same check.

I’ll have a look at it then as it seems to be a reoccurring problem but thank you for replying.

I will try that with the multimeter but I think the voltage is ok as everything works when the battery kicks in and when I turn off and then start it up again, it holds a little charge 🤯🤯

Do you have an cigarette socket adaptors for USB or similar....these stay powered when plugged in and will flatten the battery

In car camera left plugged ?

Unfortunately, no, nothing is the cigarette lighter and I have checked things like the interior lights, headlights etc

I've got one of those voltmeters myself . £1 off Amazon. Really handy for the price.

Till you trace problem you could take one battery lead off at night , save agg of jump starting , as long as you can manually use door locks. Done it myself in past with ropey batteries.

I have seen posts regarding fans over-running and not going off, on Fabia's in general... Have you noticed if it goes off or if it keeps running? Other electrical faults may well arise. Check the earth strap from the battery to the chassis is in good, clean condition and well secured at both ends, for starters. Charge up the new battery fully and have it tested, to be sure there is no fault there, too. Unlikely if it was brand new but if previously used......

The fan seems to stop when turned off.
it’s a new battery from a reputable company and I’ve drove the car 35 miles and touch wood it seems to have stopped losing battery power.

Lidl had those battery testers in the other week. I got one, they're a good job for checking batteries and alternators, only cost a few pound too. Maybe the new battery was dodgy? Touch wood its ok for you now.

I've had a new battery recently (Octavia Mk111), could not get to Skoda dealer (lockdown) so ordered Bosch online as recommended but really helpful service guy said new battery has to be reprogrammed in - local garage did it via diagnostic plug. Apparently management compensates for detected flat/suspect battery by boosting charge etc and will continue doing so to new battery and damaging it. Oh for classic car that you can work on!! I now have car in dealers as unplugged electricals under heated seats due to water ingress (long story) and after connecting again all electrics are a complete mess - warning lights about everything and car undriveable. Should have gone to dealers to sort, my bad.?
