Refurbished Rear Differential for 2014 Octavia 4x4 estate

Featured Replies

Hi

The rear differential on my 2014 Octavia 2.0 SE estate needs replacing due to excessive bearing noise which is rapidly getting worse. My local friendly garage has confirmed this by running the car on a car lift with a stethoscope on the differential. However, they have not yet sourced a replacement differential (or anyone who can refurnish mine).

A new diff is not a viable option at over £4k and I am reluctant to get a used one.

Has anyone had theirs refurbished by a transmission specialist and if so by whom?

Thanks

Richard

You can get a good used unit complete with haldex coupling & pump for less than £400 delivered from E-bay sellers or breakers on a site I recently used called Quinetic or something.

Have you by any chance done or had done a Haldex oil change recently?

If so my money is on your diff being dry and if the noise is audible and rapidly getting worse then it will self destruct very soon.

The diff units are bulletproof unless an idiot like me or many garages & main dealers uses the wrong drain plug, I was very very lucky a year ago having driven 400+ miles including 200 miles heavily laden on UK motorways & French Autoroutes before realising and correcting my mistake. I have slight transmission noise but in 10K miles it has not got worse.

Hi, I’d be interested in any more information you have on this issue - particularly the comment re “bullet proof”. My Skoda Octavia 4x4 has been serviced regularly (as per manufacturer’s instructions, including the haldex oil and now @ 114,500 miles I’m told the rear diff is failing. I was quoted £4800 for a new read diff, which is more than the car is worth but can’t understand why a regularly serviced car would suffer this unexpected issue (as opposed to other parts that regularly need replaced).

I've only used the guys below for servicing and brakes but they are actually a specialist gearbox and transmission outfit and have generally been good to deal with.  They are a bit rough and ready but seem to know their stuff as they did work on our old Octavia 4x4, knew about the early Honda Civic CDTi clutch issues and are always busy so have a decent reputation.  It may therefore be worth giving them a call to see what they have / can do, even though they are a long way from you...

I eventually bought a secondhand diff through PartsGateway for just under £400 including delivery. It was then fitted by my local garage. The only real risk with this is the cost of fitting as if the diff turns out to be faulty, it will be exchanged/refunded but that doesn't cover the fitting cost.

Did it work? All sorted?
