Damp patch under back

Featured Replies

Noticed yesterday a damp patch under the back end of my 2020 Karoq, placed cardboard under over night and found it wet, looks like it was dripping from the end of the exhaust box car not been driven for two days and has only done short drives before that.

Could it be water collecting  in the back box due to the short drives?

Not suggesting you should taste it, but does it seem more like water than diesel or petrol? You can certainly get condensation dripping from a cold silencer before it's heated up.

It looked like just water no smell and did not feel oily to touch.

going to keep an eye on it and see if it’s keeps happening

I have the same patch all the time from my 2018 Karoq.  Haven’t really examined it but I guess it’s (mainly) water as it does evaporate but more slowly than water even in hot weather.  I nearly always do short journeys of less than 10 miles so it could well be condensation in the exhaust.

.. or from the aircon.

Yes I did think of the air con which I leave on all the time.  Strange how it seems to take longer than expected to evaporate though?

Aircon drips are more common when it has been working hard, and I'd expect to see that under the bonnet rather than the boot?

Yeah or under the middle of the car and you get folk telling you excitedly that your car is leaking something!!!

We did a 5 mile trip home the other day in our 190tdi.

there is a hump to get onto drive over footpath and my wife gets out there. By the time I had moved forward again a puddle of water under the exhaust on the road and puddles all down the drive and again under exhaust where the car was parked.

Very hot so the a/c had been working hard.

Dripping water under the front of the car (a bit to the middle)..a/c drainage.
Dripping water from the back..exhaust condensation and definitely petrol car. Simple.

No mine is a diesel!

Well..i know it can happen with diesel but it has to be very cold (outside temp and very cold exhaust) but happens in reality that is only noticeable on petrol cars. Might be that a/c drainage spills some water on plastic undertray and water finds its way to the back. As long it is water, whatever causes might be, shouldnt be something to worry about.
