Electrical relay problems (Help & Advice Please)

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Car broke down again and again points to electrical or relay problems, the RAC guy said it was coming from this relay box (see photo) but its intermittent and I'm really not sure what to do next.

New Box or will used box help as per money is strapped being on a low income if a new box does anyone know the correct name for this box or the part number please? should I buy new relays?

and best of all does this box just unplug

If anyone can help I'd be really grateful.

make and name of car is in my signature

.

You can check/clean the relay contacts as you would with old style mechanical points ignition, obviously you don't need to set the gap though.

Just check both the relay pins and socket are clean and good fitting, prise the cover off and inspect for burned/pitted contacts.

You could also try tapping the relays one by one in situ with the handle of a screwdriver to see if you can provoke a failure when the engine is running or get it to start when failed.

I recall you've not had much luck with this car, to further diagnose - do you lose some or all electrics?

Presumably a scan didn't suggest any issue with the ignition key transponder which may be intermittent and causing engine to cut... just thinking aloud.

well when it broke down it said OIL when he done a scan it said glow plugs then he reset everything and all the lights have gone off now, he just said the problem lies when he moves this relay box about but its very Intermittent,

I could take out all the relays and clean them and spray some contact cleaner (WD40) in the connectors

prise the cover off ? is the cover not off then?

yea had loads of problems with this car but mainly now all electrical a scan seems pointless as soon as the electrical thing happens something else will say its wrong, when it does drive though she drives really sweet

For an internal application in an area possibly being further investigated it's not ideal as it leaves an oily mess although the solvent flushing action of the spray will clean to an extent.

If the relay blades look clean and bright try blowing the sockets clean with air and reinserting the relay several times to remove any connection oxidation.

I bought some WD-40 Specialist Fast Drying Contact Cleaner with Smart Straw 400ml cant do no harm and not oily like standard WD40

You didn't specify that.

No I never heard of it MicMac so thought got be worth a go as WD does have a good rep,

electrics is the last problem that keeps going wrong on my car I wish there was a fair priced place I could take it where they would go right through it,  spent loads trying to keep my Skoda running well cuz I do love the car, just as well I only paid cheap for it even though it had full service history, cuz it left me with some to spend on bits but Jesus I never expected this much lol

I dunno, you'll have to look/feel to see if it's anything more than just a panel full of relay sockets.  Won't it be one of the relays that's plugged into it that's misbehaving, rather then anything else?

I dont know the RAC guy said when he moved the box about it played up all I can do is clean all the relays and sockets really if I can feel a plug in the back give that a clean

Hi Guys been doing a bit of research and found 1 that looks the same as mine though it dont seem to include the top relays so might be 2 separate boxes. They seem to be plug and play what do you guys think?

New ones are nearly £600 used from ebay about £20-30 but going to try using contact cleaner 1st

Posting photos of them so if anyone else has to replace them you will know what to look for at least lol

The names that it seems to identify the main relay box is ONBOARD SUPPLY CONTROL MODULE or Skoda Octavia Mk2 1Z 2007 Comfort convenience module.

The actual name for it is CECM Central Electronics Control Module

You can also find it in a host of VAG cars 2004 - 2009 Mk5 Golf, Early Tiguans, Scirocco

Some relays are controlled elsewhere.

You need to scan the car and try finding out which Terminal is not working

The Relays are

Terminal 15 Switched Live

Terminal 30 permanent Live

Terminal 75 supply

Thanks for that Eddi, the RAC guy did a scan on it and wrote these notes so he said replace the box but I was going to use contact spray and give it all a clean,  do you think I should try and source a used one as it does say its intermittent so it may not show on a scan? any advice would be really helpful please Eddi

They are quite cheap now, but you will need vcds to fit it, if you are not buying exactly the same one don't copy and paste the coding either.

Check that the relays are ok, you could try using the same numbered ones in a different place or test them.

Hi Eddie can you advise me please mate?

I cleaned all the relays and ports off with the contact cleaner but when I pulled the 395 relays off the relay covers come off so I pushed them both back on and wiggled them out, if the covers come off does that break the relays? car still wont start and i,m really stuck,

do you think replacing all the relays might help as I could not see how the relay box comes out so I dont know the part number as its on the back or I would buy another one on ebay, or if you know what one it is could you give me an ebay link please and will get my mate in the garage to fit it as I dont know how to set it up

hope you can help mate as really stuck now I wish I had the money to just take it to a garage and say just fix it (how the other half live A)
