WiFi (MiFi) keep losing connection.......

Featured Replies

Ever since purchasing my Win10 laptop it has been a bit of a pita............... (I'm guessing it's more to do with the set up???)

Generally this (Win10) only gets used once a month (mainly banking) and so therefore updated only when I use it.

Nearly every time trying to do the updates, for some reason it will not stay connected to my WiFi.It will connect but it keeps losing the connection. NB I have NO such issues with my WIN7 laptop or my phone connecting to MiFi, so thinking it is the WIN10 laptop settings............???

Any help (using simple instructions if possible) would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers.

No answer as such, but had similar issues with windows 10 having a meltdown on WiFi every so often.

Sadly I had took the wired option as my temporary solution and lockdown meant I have not investigated further.

W10 has a habit of setting by default the option to power down the WiFi if it hasn't been used for a period, worth searching out that option and making sure it's not ticked.

Maybe your wifi card is an 5Ghz card (a and c modes) and your router is a 2Ghz one (bgn modes), or vice versa,  thus it is nearly impossible to stay connected to each other. Check the types of wifi modes in your router's setting and your wifi card type on your new laptop.

There is also the possibility of your router to be capable transmitting in both bands simultaneously but you will have to activate that function.

Thanks @PetrolDave

I am trying to check the power management as googly mentions it as a possible problem.

Says 'Right click Network Adaptor / Properties / Power Management and then un-check "turn off WiFi Adaptor to save power".

I cannot find anywhere on my laptop where this option comes up though.

I have tried troubleshooting 'network and internet settings and also 'windows updates' without success.

Unfortunately I have no idea what stratosg is mentioning above......... my ignorance.

Cheers.

Found it.......

Windows 7 laptop and googly bailing out my windows 10.

What a way to spend my bank holiday ffs. Hopefully it will update properly now and without wasting a lot of my data.

I may need to upgrade my data allowance. it seems that Win10 likes a lot.

No need to mention anything about ignorance. First of all my English are not that good and then, I am unable to grow a tomato plant or keep any plant alive. So...

I meant that you need to know what is your laptop's network card properties. Keep in mind that wireless network cards (wi-fi) and wireless routers do work like radio does. In the following link you can find info about wi-fi bands. https://turbofuture.com/computers/Things-you-mustwant-to-know-about-WIFI

While you can either follow the next link  https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000500.htm or right click on start menu of win 10 then click on device manager.  From the list on the new window double click ' Network Adapters'. Then on the one that states Wi-Fi  either perform right click and properties or just write down and then google for the type of the network card you found.

In example my wi-fi card is as the pic below states an Intel Wi-Fi AX201 which is a dual band card currently working at 802.11 a/c mode at 5Ghz band. Also I included the properties window focused on Power management Tab, so to see where to choose if your computer is allowed to turn off your Wi-Fi card. Though my windows version is the 'Professional' one.

Then by giving your router's ip (most common is 192.168.1.1) you may be able to see at the Wi-Fi status the band that your router is transmitting (2.4 GHz or 5GHz). Take a look at my router's properties.

Well, I'm gonna have to look into this a bit more................... not today though.

I thought I had sorted it as had found and unchecked the (unnecessary IMO) check box and I'm sure I restarted the laptop too, and kept my fingers crossed, or maybe I should have kept them crossed.

However, the updates still wouldn't complete the update and final nail in the coffin was the internet connection dropped out again :crying:.

Thanks @stratosg. I will look into what you mention later. my dongle is 802.11 but not sure the GHz or where to find this out.

If it is b/g/n then it is 2.4GHz, else if it is a/c or a/x then it is 5GHz. Keep in mind that in order not to lose connection both your dongle and your router must be set at the same frequency.

Finally if they are at the same frequency and you still face connection issues, try to update or re install Wi-Fi dongle's drivers. If you need some help that I can provide through here, just ask. I hope I can help as I am located in northern Greece.

Thanks for the info bud.........

If they are at different frequencies would they even connect at all though ??????????

It does connect and it has done some updates successfully in the past months (probably had it about a year or so now)... but has dropped out on a number of occasions but the laptop power saving has obviously caused that at least some of the time.

I will try next time I have both laptops switched on for info from the Win7 one. I will let you know more when I get the connection sorted. Hopefully, sorting the connection will also allow the updates to download properly. Fingers crossed.

Cheers.

It is very possible to connect and then loses connection. It happened to me as well but with my smartphone. It was a phone that had 2.4GHz dongle and the router was at 5GHz. Then my phone got connected and after few moments kept losing connection. It depends on hardware.

  • Author

Thanks @stratosg..... It doesn't lose connection after only a few moments though.

It stays connected for possibly 10 minutes or thereabouts so I think it is the laptop turning it off still.

I'm glad I still have this one to use.......

I have now checked the driver update and the Win10 'has the best driver already installed' it says.

The switch off check box remains unchecked (so will not switch off to save power) yet the laptop still disconnects. It is quite annoying

As I mentioned at the time of forced purchase of the win10 due to lack of updates for win7............. I was happy with my win7.

@stratosgIf you still think it may be the GHz issue then the dongle says 802.11n but I cannot find the information for the wifi card.

I have read your posts a few times. So still not resolved.

Cheers though to all replied.

The GHz will only be an problem if windows kept hopping between multiple networks, with the same name but different frequencies. If it dropped it would connect to the new one ASAP.

Try disabling the 5GHz in the router and see if your problems go away. If it doesn’t it isn’t the issue.

I’ve seen similar in windows with certain laptops with certain WiFi chips.

Others have been fine, so it’s all a bit of a mess tbh.

I’m tempted to wait for the AX cards to become available at a reasonable price and then see what happens there with a swap.

Is that my dongle ??? Do you know how I would do that??? I have been looking at my dongle settings and do not recall anything mentioning either 2.4 OR 5GHz

Please note, I have one win7 laptop and one win10 laptop, and a huawei Mifi 3g dongle. And I usually only connect one laptop at a time....... they have occasionally been connected at the same time.  If this makes any difference.

And the win10 laptop will RE-CONNECT itself, sometimes too, after disconnecting itself.

I don't think I have a router.............. just a modem (dongle) I think

According to this chap then 802.11ac is fully backwards compatible........ so shouldn't be an issue with 802.11n I guess???

The router is the thing that plugs into your phone line and generates the WiFi signal.

Cheers. I have no phone line.......... just a mobile WiFi (MiFi) dongle.

Right; so you don't have WiFi, you have mobile internet - which means all the thoughts about WiFi standards issues don't apply.

Which mobile network do you use (O2, Vodafone, EE, etc.)?

That HUAWEI dongle is a mobile to WiFi bridge, so it is WiFi.

It has an admin address either listed in the manual or on it. On windows if you type ipconfig /all the WiFi connection will show you a default gateway IP address.  That will almost certainly be the mifi dongle IP address, which will present a management page if you type it into a browser.

As for 802.11ac, I doubt the 3G version of the dongle does that, more likely N.

If the laptop is ac then yes it’s backward compatible.

@cheezemonkhai @PetrolDave

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have taken the laptop to work and office lass connected it to work's wifi......... Updates will still not complete......... internet connection stayed stable though and it has been ok once or twice with my 3G MiFi.......... (Two generic error codes were shown during troubleshooting (iirc) such as 0x8000ffff. (I didn't see the other one).

So....... we are now considering a (I think) factory reset to hopefully sort this out???????

NB during the updates attempt I was notified that the Windows version is out of date..........????????

Any correct, best and EASIEST solution advice gratefully received.  Office girl is more proficient with Mac, but she is more tech savvy than me anyway, probably by a mile, Lol. Thank you.

The machine is just over a year old purchase wise and does not hold any particular files or the like that I need........... HP15s-fq1505na core i5 10th gen.

What version of Windows do you have on it?

If it's windows 10... the office is out of date sounds like you basically need to do a major update via windows update to a newer version of windows 10 (It's free).

The wifi on that laptop isn't one I personally like dealing with, the spec sheet specified "Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11b/g/n/ac (1x1) and Bluetooth® 4.2 Combo"

The fact that it's a 1x1 also means it's not going to be as fast as it could be in ac mode, but that's not the end of the world, just a comment.

If you have an ethernet port, then plug it into the router and let it do it that way.

From what I can see you don't, so I suggest you buy something like this (Make sure it's USB 3 or C and it doesn't require a driver)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Network-Adapter-Syncwire-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B074CDL78M

Plus an ethernet cable if you don't have one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/C2G-Booted-Unshielded-Network-Patch/dp/B001U3ZQH8

or

https://www.amazon.co.uk/KabelDirekt-Ethernet-Connector-High-Speed-Shielding/dp/B01FHYOX0G

Then plug it into the router and do the updates that way.

@cheezemonkhaithanks for reply

I remember seeing (whilst waiting for the updates downloading) something like Windows 10 current version 1903 and the new version available is something like version 2004.................. so yes, newer version of windows required. (I wonder if this is what is preventing other updates happening....... I read something similar online).

But like mentioned, nothing will finalise or update properly. With the girl in the office helping me and I'm sure the wifi at work will allow for much faster speeds than I have???

I have read a good bit (dated late last year) with folk saying Microsoft were behind with this new version and a lot of people were struggling to get the version update.
