Bigger brakes for 1.4 140hp

Featured Replies

Hi, I think front brakes are 288mm.

Can I install bigger brakes for example 340mm from vrs?

Will this this be a straight swap?

Also can I use brakes from different cars/models? Audi? Seat? Something else for 4pistons?

I don't want strange modifications. I prefer something plug and play

The brakes fitted to your car should be adequate relating to the stopping power required; why would you want to change them?

The limiting stopping power on a car is the tyres as they give up grip before the brakes stop working.

So get grippier tyres if you want to stop quicker.

The below cars all use 340mm front brake discs with OEM part number 1K0615301AD. The Skoda online parts catalogue only goes up to 2016. However, later cars such as Karoq, Kodiaq, Superb MK3 also use these 340mm front brake discs on certain models. Find this 340mm front brake disc in the Skoda online parts catalogue, and then make a note of the associated parts such as the brake calipers and brake carriers. I suggest you just look at left calipers and left carriers to begin with, as the right ones are simply the matching pairs which you can choose after deciding which left caliper and left carrier you want to use.

Nothing 4-piston will do that, they all require some adapters and will not fit behind normal Skoda wheels with no spacers.

Only thing I would consider is 312mm front, good enough for the MK7 GTi, good enough for most standard Octys

The weight of 340mm brakes will make your front suspension crashy having a light engine and with a torsion beam you will end up with crashy front and rear

As said above the question is why you want bigger brakes?? What is the exact problem you are trying to solve

My car now has more hp and maybe I will increase more.

Also if I can stop earlier, I feel safer.

Last, for the look

I didn't imagine that the extra weight will cause such big difference in ride quality

Vrs models I suppose are OK. Is it because of stronger suspension? Something else?

How much more HP is your car now? And how much do you plan on increasing?
i would imagine standard front discs would be sufficient for your purpose.
I had a 1.8 Golf that I bumped up by 50BHP and was absolutely fine on standard brakes.

How much power and torque is your car now making?   I've done upgrades to 312 mm front discs on both my Mk4 Golf GT TDI, many years ago and much more recently to my remapped 2106 Yeti 150 TDI.  The Yeti was upgraded by fitting Mk5 /6 Golf GTI caliper carriers and 312 mm drilled and vented discs.

If you want more retardation, it's possible to fit Porsche 4 pot calipers onto 312 mm discs.  To do that you'd need something like this kit plus the front calipers from Porsche 986, i.e. first generation Boxster.  https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/darkside-mk4-platform-312mm-brake-upgrade-fitting-kit-for-porsche-986-4-pot-front-calipers.html

The Porsche calipers would offer the biggest upgrade.  They would increase retardation ability as well as feel and the ability to modulate brake application much more.   With these brakes, I think there would be no need to go to bigger discs with the penalty of increased unsprung weight.

There doesn't seem to be much demand from Octavia MK3 VRS owners to downgrade to 288mm front brakes.

Greece is a hot country. 340mm front discs will run cooler than smaller discs. Porsche calipers won't help with cooling.

To save weight, you could run narrower 205/50R17 tyres on 6.5Jx17 ET38 rims from a Kodiaq.

6.5Jx17 ET38 steel rims weigh 10.53kg each.

205/50R17 tyres weigh less than 225/45R17 tyres.

288mm front brake discs weigh 7.3kg each

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/brembo/7005461

312mm front brake discs weigh 8.6kg each

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/brembo/1657592

340mm front brake discs weigh 10.8kg each

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/brembo/8714327

6.5Jx17 ET38 steel rims, 205/50R17 tyres, and 340mm front discs will weigh about the same as 7Jx17 ET49 alloy rims, 225/45R17 tyres, and 312mm front discs.
