Air con

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I’ve tried to search this but can’t find an answer and I wonder if anyone could help?

basically my aircon is constantly blowing even when it’s set to ‘0’ or off.

I can’t see this being normal? Will this be affecting my mpg? And what’s the fix for this?

You mean the fan is blowing constantly?

If so does the speed change or is it stuck blowing at one speed?

Thankyou for the reply. Yeah, the fan is constantly blowing. Its definitely turned on 0 and shouldn’t be blowing. It I set the temperature to cold, it will blow cold and the same with hot. I have to shut the vents as I don’t always want ac on! :)  it stays blowing at one speed obviously unless u set it to 1, 2, 3 etc.

If you have plain aircon rather than climate control, switching the aircon off doesn't switch the heater fan off.

Oh and with climate control, toggling between AUTO and ECON modes doesn't measurably affect the instantaneous mpg on the trip computer.

I think that’s the case to be honest, so it’s normal for it to be blowing even when it’s set to 0? It also makes a horrible squeaking sound when it’s turned on 1,2 etc, any guesses as to what that could be?

Even with the fan off it will blow if you're driving unless you put it into recirculation mode, only then will you have no ventilation at all.

A/C will/should not switch on if the cabin fan isn't running, are you saying yours does? (Does the light in the switch go on/off when you press switch with fan at 0?)

Is the squeaking sound in the cabin or the engine bay?

Hi mate, thanks for the reply, not sure what you mean by this? Yes, my AC light is not on, setting set to 0 and the vents still blow air out of them. If I turn it to hot, hot air will blow out etc despite aircon set to 0 (off) the squeaking sound is in the cabin

Ok, well if the light's not on, then your A/C isn't doing anything, so it won't be affecting your mpg.

The fan bearings are probably worn and corroded. Fiddly access but not difficult to swap another fan in there.

The airflow you're experiencing is just passive by the sounds of it, due to the movement of the car.  Does it stop blowing when you stop?

Just pop up a photo of your A/C/heating controls to make sure we're all on the same page.

Hello,

What position do you have on your AC/heating controls like in the below photo?

Of the four when mine is on the right (air towards the driver) it does exactly what you are describing so I permanently have it pointing up (air towards windscreen) unless actually using the AC or heating.

Yep, standard 'Climatic' A/C system.

I was thinking that it was due to the car moving, yes it stops when I stop!

@Kade1010 - Well I think the noise is either fan bearings as above, or else an issue with the fan blades striking the duct, or dead leaves in the duct.
