Why the split wing mirror?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had my new Fabia Elegance a week now, and am quite pleased with it so far.

But one thing puzzles me: the driver's wing mirror has a vertical split-line near the right hand edge. The dealer says it that the outer part is the "long distance" portion. To me it is just a useless, distorted bit.

Do others have this feature? What is the point of it?

It is there for a reason.

Most cars have it in some way, shape or form.

It is the wide angle bit which is supposed to remove the blindspot so that when you check your mirrors prior to moving lane, you can (hopefully) see if there is anything there without having to perform a "lifesaver" check.

If it's the same as the Octy, it's too reduce (if not eliminate) the blind spot.

Bugger: beaten to it!!

I still **** (c.o.c.k) my head round to check anyway tbh.

I think all new cars have this now, after a while you soon get used to it.

Me too. Especially when coming off a slip road onto a motorway/dual carriageway.

Yep, its designed to help eliminate or atleast reduce the blind spot, but nothing beats a quick turn of the head to make sure imho

Its especially usefull on motorways, try it if you are travelling on the inside lane, you can still see a vehicle thats in the outside (3rd) lane.

Thanks guys, I'll see what I can make of it in future.

I always do this as well.

IMHO it is rubbish at what it is supposed to do. If you check from the normal part of the mirror to the blind spot part there is only a tiny difference. I have fitted a stick on blind spot mirror but also look over my shoulder, a habit from the bike but has saved me a few times.

It's stopped an incident occuring a couple of times when I had my Bora (same mirrors). Well worth having. What else could be done better with that inch of mirror?

It is becoming apparent to me that this split mirror exists in two versions. Those in favour say it covers the blind spot. That can only be if the outside inch is angled inwards, to reveal an area to the left of the main mirror. Mine is simply a continuation of the main area, to the right (the only difference being that it is compressed to look unnaturally thin. So no blind spot is revealed!

Do I complain and get it changed?

Reduces, rather than removes the blind spot. Sit in the car and have someone walk past and you'll see there's still a sizable blind area. Quick look and frequent mirror use is the only way to be sure

No - the "blind spot" is when a car or a bike is almost alongside you - typically on a multi-lane carriageway; not behind you. Almost all new cars have mirrors like these nowadays...

Definitely - I also found the mirrors in the Fabia were quite small compared to other cars I've owned. I guess aerodynamics in favour of visibility....!

Thats funny:D , if you just turn your head the blind spot is eliminated with no distortion what so ever. (Too many years on motorbikes I suppose, force of habit)

It's in case you're old and can't turn your head like you used to. Try it. Then call your insurer :P

i just lean forwards whilst looking in the mirror, you can see much further round doing that :D
