The good, the (not so) bad and definitely not ugly Octavia iV Estate

It's time for a further update. On December 29th the 12v battery had dropped to 4 volts overnight, KESSY didn't work, so I had to call Skoda Assist (the AA) out. After a short time on a battery booster, the battery voltage rose to 12 volts and I left my own trickle charger connected overnight. The 12 volt battery was tested (a pain to get at as it's under a cover in the boot next to the main battery) and it was fine. I sent an angry e-mail to the dealer and they had the car in for a week and apparently installed a software update to solve a problem with the 12 volt battery control unit. Since then the car has performed normally, the only 'glitches' being a couple of times the car defaulted to hybrid mode (fixed by switching the ignition off and on) and a low 12 volt battery warning. I'm now living with the fact that the car may occasionally function incorrectly, but so far I've been able to fix the problems myself. After clocking up 4500 miles the car has averaged 87 mpg, the performance continues to amaze me and I love everything about the car, hence my decision not to reject it. Skoda Connect hasn't been working since last September, but I've decided that I can manage without it since all the preheat and charging times can be set using the infotainment centre. One minot issue has turned out not to be a fault. The two key fobs flashed inside the house, so I changed the batteries: no change. I eventually found out that the light flashes when the fob is communicating with the car. The signal penetrates the garage and house walls and the flashing only stopped when I moved about two metres away from the house wall. So presumably the car is susceptible to thieves using a unit to pick up the signal whenever the key flashes. It's safe at home in a locked garage with the keys kept upstairs at night, but whenever I stay away overnight I have a steering wheel locking bar. One tip: practice using the emergency key as I found it awkward.

  • My petrol VRS can only dream of such MPG's. I get around town 28 , motorway 42 tops. I didnt give that a thought when i ordered. I just thought ooh the spirited drive, slip diff , 0-60 etc.

Hi Jim. As I understand it from your posts you are generally pleased  with the car and unless I have missed something this is the first significant issue you have encountered - the failure of your veh

  • The Octy had its software update today, which for some reason Skoda calls a campaign. The main issue was the inability to store favourites and this has been fixed. I had none of the issues other forum

Isn't it cheaper and also faster using a "tin can" as a Faraday cage for your key fob?

We keep our keys in a little metal box in the hallway.

I’ve not really had any issues with my car yet. Occasionally it won’t overtake when on ACC but it’s only when it’s really busy when I don’t really need it on.

I'm an owner of an Octavia for about 9 months or so (13k km driven). I might say that I'm rather disappointed with this one compared to the mk2 facelift Octavia. Mostly because of these reasons:

1) all these annoying ecology and safety things (all these beeps, start stops etc. Lane assistant is SUPER MEGA annoying). I understand that maybe in this case it's not Skoda's fault but anyway - that's soooo annoying. Driving on 2 cylinders maybe saves fuel but the feeling is like driving a diesel.

2) basic sound system of mk2 was far better than this one on mk4. This one is really crappy.

3) all these bugs in electronics make me feel like the car has been created in Russia. In the very beginning there was a battery draining thing (solved). Then there are sometimes not working parking sensors (hope it does get solved), faulty interior lighting and other minor things. Like I said, 13k only but I've been to dealer's more than I used to visit the garage with the old car.

4) I get a feeling that it's lower than mk2 and that sometimes causes trouble.

5) where did they get such windscreen wipers? Maybe usable in Italy but when it's colder then they are so damn loud.

6) no 12V socket??? WTF? Only one in the boot. There are 2 usb c-type sockets there but that's not enough.

7) electric handbrake and no way to move the car in case something happens - that's so lame.

8 ) that touchscreen is not the best way to do things. In older cars you could do all the stuff with not even looking any of knobs. Now you either watch the road or take a look at the menu after another menu, trying to find something. If the menu is working properly, of course.

Is there anything good to say? Well, it drives, the power output of 1.5 TSI is satisfactory for me. Fuel efficient (the annoying part about it is written above).

I have to say, while I have some serious issues with my car... electronic issues!!! I do think the car is far far better than the Mk3 FL I had. I have changed like for like cars, SE L 2.0 TDi, and, for me, its a far better car in just about every aspect except the electronic gremlins (I am being kind to Skoda here!).

1. While I agree with your first point with regard to Lane assist and the crazy amount of time the car tells me to 'Brake' when nothing is around, it seems all cars are going this way sadly.

2. For me the sound is better in the Mk4, but that is probably just a personal thing, I wish I could change the radio logos though!

3. Couldn't agree more!

4. Not noticed

5. Mine are fine, no real issues or difference for UK driving.

6. I absolutely love the fact that they have a USB C port by the rear view mirror, and two USB C in the front is great, for me I never really saw the point of the old style 12 v cigarette lighter port.

7. I love electric handbrakes, but fingers crossed they don't go wrong!

8. Agree, especially as the screen in the UK is the wrong way round with the 'Home' button as far away from the driver as they could put it!

Overall I think the car is more solid, feels far more premium and absorbs the round noise and bumps far better than the Mk3, but as ever its just a personal opinion.

all alarm and everything behind the touchscreen is unfortunatly the actual way to go on every car !

just look at the new VW with touch button even on the steering wheel, more stupid/annoying than that isn't possible

I've driven 2 mk2 Octavias - FL and pre-FL and everything seemed to be fine according to the sound quality. I don't expect much but this sound system feels rather cheap (I mean - crappy). Maybe it was worse in mk3 but I haven't driven one.

I hadn't really an option to get that USB port next to the mirror. Either I had to wait 6-7 months for the car or I could get one in 3 weeks but with some standard equipment. I chose the second option because it was like 95% everything I wanted. That port wasn't in the list unfortunately. By the way, it wasn't a very cheap option for some simple thing like a USB port... These 2 USB ports seem to be hidden a bit too deep but maybe that's only my opinion. Sometimes 2 can be not enough and the car didn't support the hub I tried to attach.

In overall I might have different thoughts but all these small faults... Every time I'm starting the car, I get the feeling - what's gonna happen this time? Nothing, really? Parking sensors working? Strange...
