Engine shake and rattle

Hi Andrea11 I understand that English is probably not your first language but I think you will find that a little courtesy and a more friendly approach to your posts will go a long way ....

Hi all, appreciate that this thread was started in 2021, and there hasn't been any response to this or further follow up from the original poster. I drive a 2017 Skoda Superb SportLine Estate, 2.0TDi with 150bhp manual engine. Full service history with Al Hayes Skoda in Ennis, Co. Clare (who I'm not going to use anymore due to work quality). The car is on 143,000kms, and has similar noises from the engine. Also audible from inside the car, when you're taking off etc. Sounds to me like an alternator pulley, or loose exhaust, etc. Kind of rattles as you pull away, but sometimes also during idle. Car has just had a new timing belt and water pump fitted by the Skoda garage, but the noise still persists. Just wondering if anyone might have experienced this before and is this a common issue.

If you mean the chirping noise that I can hear then its the alternator pulley one way sprag clutch, you will see the auxiliary drive belt jumping bcak and forth in time with it.

Your description also matches somewhat a partial failure of the aircon pulley shear plate.

Thanks J.R. -> Let me take a look and see if I can isolate where the noise is coming from - both sound like possibly costly issues, but I do enjoy the car and it's well worth resolving and keeping it in top shape. Have it booked into  a non-Skoda garage next week, so hopefully they can pinpoint the issue. I'll post back here once I know more - might be helpful for other readers too.

Run it without the aux belt, it will either confirm or rule out the alternator, tensioner or air con compressor.

Not at all if you DIY, if you rely on garages then everything is potentially a costly issue.

Hmmm, to my untrained ears it just sounds like a diesel. @Justgenius, perhaps you could record and drop a vid, but without the hugely distracting constant movements of the OP’s?

Apologies, I never got around to uploading a video. Everytime I made a video with my phone, it was too big to upload. I have taken it to a local mechanic, described the symptoms, and then managed to reproduce the sound for him. It turns out, the noise is only there when I depress the clutch and the engine is warm. I've always hated STOP/START technology, because in my mind it puts the STARTER/BATTERY under extra load/wear in traffic. So, by habit, whenever I pull up at the lights, I always leave the car in first gear and depress the clutch. By the mechanic's reckoning, it sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel. I've got to book it in sometime soon to get that done, although he has assured me that there's no rush - it's just a little noisy.

Very bad habit - If you dislike auto idle stop so much why not simply switch it off each time you drive? - keeping the car in gear with the clutch down places a lot of unnecessary wear on the clutch release and can also lead to unfortunate consequent issues, say, if your foot slips off the pedal for any reason.
