EGR adaption

Featured Replies

I was holidaying in Cornwall last week and it wasn't very successful. Spent most of it going to urgent care centres and hospital with my poorly 2.5 year old daughter who took ill whilst there. Whilst I was sat in the car park of Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro for 5 hours (because I couldn't go in with my wife due to covid rules). I got very very bored and was worried about my daughter. So I plugged in OBDELEVEN to have a look at my car to distract myself.  Anyhow I adapted the EGR valves, low pressure and the main. I was surprised at the difference it made to the engine. On the initial drive afterwards it was a little rough through adapting but it suddenly came to life. The engine feels stronger than it did, smoother and also the mpgs are sat at 50mpg where it used to be around 44-45mpg for town driving. Also the mpgs seem more stable.

Now I am not saying everyone go and adapt your egrs but I am sharing  my experience.  It helped distract me doing something whilst waiting to find out about my daughter and was quite a surprise to see how better the engine runs now. Makes me wonder if it was adapted properly from the off or if the egr needs adapting every now and then.

When you say adapted, do you mean you changed some EGR settings or you initiated some sort of reset?

I hope your daughter is ok now?

I remember going through a similar traumatic event with my daughter at about that age when she got a bad infection from a really bad mosquito bite and my wife and I did shifts staying with her (24 hours) in her room for a few days. All ended well for us and I hope that you have the same sort of resolution.

Did a basic reset. These ones are easier to do as the ecu does the reset within defined parameters already stored in the programme. The older engines you had to input the min/max voltage to adapt and make them work.

Well the reset has done something as my car was doing 64mpg on the motorway. Took photo when I had come off the motorway and got to my destination. That was over a 55mile trip. Normally I'd get around 54-55mpg over the same drive. Given this is a DSG in normal mode and not quite as economical as a manual, it is impressive.

That is a noticeable improvement to consumption but it is now about what I would expect  for a diesel on a longer run with a high motorway component.

Be interesting to see if others follow up on your tip and get similar benefits

I'd agree that manuals are capable of offering better consumption than an auto around town but that might be countered by the autos longer gearing benefits on a motorway ?

I will definitely be giving this a go. Having the auto box that also occasionally /s drives the rear wheels means Im happy if I get 45 on a long old run lol :D
