MK3 hitch load sensor

Featured Replies

Ok, so a friend of mine has an MK3, with a towing hitch, all factory, as well as mine, but he has this display on the maxidot, where i do not, i have trailer assist , he does not, anyone ever seen this?
Sorry its not in english, but ill translate from top to bottom,
Says Trailer,

then hitch load: ---kg,

then trailer load: ----kg,

then mind max trailer load!

Read the manual!
Any info is golden as to why he has that and i do not, and how to get it!

I have this too. You can switch off this menu in the mib. But what i would like to know: how to set these numbers to the values the towing hook dictates.

Here is the english version

Thank you, can you explain if that menu is always accesible, or only when the hitch is out, or only when a trailer is connected? And how do you turn the menu on or off? In the MIB, or on the maxidot? I cant seem to find it anywhere? Does your care maybe have DCC

As far as I understand this, you cant set the numbers, its supposed to show you the numbers once a trailer is connected, it should read the numbers for you!

Menu is always accessible. In the MIB.

Car→setup→instruments

I have DCC indeed. But no loads are displayed when I'm towing.

Just tried this today, no menu in the MIB or on the dash, factory installed hitch, all OEM, no menu whatsoever! Strange!

How can this possibly measure weight? Interested in the technicalities of how the system works

I'd guess that there's a load sensor somewhere in the mechanism that knows what an unloaded ball measures and can identify the weight when it's loaded.

I'm sorry, I just can't help repeating myself :blush

I suspect it uses sky hooks in some clever way?

My guess would be that it utilises the sensor for the light beam, mounted on the rear axel, but that is just a guess..

This is a sensible and plausible response to a menu feature (probably created by a bored teenager) that has blank values.

As for all the hypotheses of load cells etc measuring the towball loading they are just pure comedy but please keep them coming :D:D

Skyhooks gets my favorite vote so far

A really clever system could estimate the towed mass by comparing acceleration rate in a given gear at full throttle with and without something connected to the tow hitch (electric skt).

ABS sensor wheel speed changes for the rear wheels relative to fronts could possibly calculate rear end loading with and without same connection.

Probably neither though, and it's just displaying the (unchanging) design limits if it displays anything at all.

Its probably one of the vehicles that did not have towing preparation ordered on the factory build and that has a zero towing limit on the CoC and V5 :D

I would love to have that display if I were able to change the figures with VCDS, that would come in very very handy for my next few journeys!

Why would it be comedy, if tucks have axle load sensors why would cars be any different, it is doable, and plausible, really dont get the comedy here.. And yes, the rear light leveling sensor could approximate the weight very easily!

As for the menu, no, my car has been ordered with the hitch, its not a blank plate with 0 towing capacity..

Possibly @SashaGrace knows how to code that menu in?

Submarines have nuclear reactors, why should cars be any different? it is doable, and plausible.

Answer - Because, just because!

Interesting.

I also have a trailer hitch (from factory), but I never had this message on the Maxi DOT.

I assume the load on the hitch could be assessed with the pitch angle, which may be measured either by front beams  (if Xenon equiped) or by DCC system. The latter one has sensors on both suspension arm. It's used for the control loop of the system. These sensors could assess the hitch load depending on the rear axle height variation.

Just guessing...

Regarding the trailer load, I'm much more curious on how it could be assessed...

Keep the theories coming :D:D:thumbup::thumbup:

The blank field for the trailer load clearly has not rung any bells with people in their flights of fantasy.

They are blank field with the values to be inserted either during the configuration of the vehicles modules (in this case the instrument module) or to be done from the user menu or VCDS etc, they are not parameters measured by the vehicle.

You mean if I tow a cattle trailer at bang on 3.5t I won't be waved on my merry way when I point at my maxidot that says 750kg??

Thats why I would quite like that function to go with the new tare plate for my 750kg site hut trailer that is going to the UK with me tomorrow for the first of several removal journeys.

It weighs 750kg allegedly, probably more in truth and therefore cannot carry any load unless it is registered and insured in France and has brakes, in fact the registration is compulsory over 500kg but this one predates the law change from 750kg to 500kg.

Supposedly they are supposed to be towed on the road empty and unladen between sites but most are converted with toilets, sinks, a kitchenette and table & chairs etc so weigh lots more.

The leaf sprung axle and truck wheels mean it can carry a tremendous load and you see them doing that every day whilst bearing the registration number of the tow vehicle.

Whoever made the Tare plate up (mmm, now who could that be?) must have only weighed one wheel as it now has a PTAC of 750kg and a PV of 375kg , when it returns with the contents of my workshop it would be good to have an equally confused  Maxidot display :D

I had a look to this menu. But I don't see anything referring to towing load or hitch load

(Also a MY2017 with DCC).

@J.R. You seem really sure of what you write. May I know, where you get your information from? Not looking for controversy, just curious. ;)

Give it up folks it's a spoof, else some development project for students - either way, if ever it came to the market it would cost a fortune in the extras list - I mean Skoda charge an extra £150 for a length of Bowden Cable to release the back seat from the hatch!

Not sure why everyone is so pesimistic, i mean, load sensors are not that expensive, nor is it a problem to calibrate a sensor to tell an approx load.. Albeit its still not needed in cars, but trucks do have them regularly and its no big deal..

About the menu, i cant find it at all, so ill give it a looksy with obd11, could be that its just not there at all!
