Engine noise

Featured Replies

Hi this may have been covered before but I have just got hold of a 2005 Fabia 1.4 Petrol automatic with the BKY engine code which has quite a harsh tapping noise when at idle and when accelerating, once I come off the throttle the noise stops. This vehicle has covered 68k and has very good history I have changed all 16 lifters and have fully serviced the car but its still there I am suspecting piston slap. So my questions are has anyone else had this issue? And is the auto engine different to the manual ones as I have heard that you cannot simply bang another same code engine in as manual and auto's are not a simple swap. I will try and upload a video that I have of the problem.  Many thanks

Just tried the video but the file was too big

Put it on youtube, and do a link then.

It's not piston slap, the car would smoke like a chimney if it were.

It's more likely to be detonation, have you checked the spark plugs?

Consider removing the exhaust manifold heatshield to be able to look for manifold gasket leaks (soot evidence). You'd think that would be a farty noise rather than a 'harsh tapping noise' but you might be surprised.

The auto engine is different, something to do with how the starter motor mounts, I think.

There are also BKY engines with and without EGR valves, does yours have one?

Not sure I agree about the smoking; piston slap sounds like a whoosh, whoosh, whoosh... sound IME before it ever gets the length of oil usage.

Managed to get a link hope this helps a little.

I haven't seen piston slap in years, modern engines are so finely toleranced and oils so good that I can't imagine how it would happen. If you have enough skirt wear for the piston to rock in the bore that much then oil blowby is a certainty so I'm not sure why you don't agree Ken other than that you're inherently argumentative.

Agreed, I am old enough and could only afford doggy cars to know first hand what piston slap, pre-ignition, detonation, big end knock, main bearing rumble, loose flywheel bolts (the worst knocking imaginable) con rod bush wear, rocker shaft wear, tappet wear etc sound like first hand, other than trackday or competition failures of classic engines usually oil starvation I have not heard any of these noises probably for 30 years. All I ever get to hear these days is diesel knock or hydraulic lifter tap.

Most people who speak of them have just picked up the terms from the internet.

To the OP, try running your engine with the auxiliary drive belt removed to eliminate the alternator pulley sprag clutch, the absence of noise on over-run makes me suspect it.

Not sure the OP's car will have  a freewheel alternator pulley. Photo of it end-on would tell.

Neither have I. of, course, at that point I hadn't heard the engine running, but that sounds more like tappets than piston slap anyway.

Iv changed all the lifters and found nothing out of the ordinary top end. i'm thinking piston slap because when i accelerate the noise is very apparent as the pistons are on the thrust so to speak and once im off the throttle on the over run it disappears. so maybe piston slap or the gugden pin is worn pardon the spelling lol
