Key fob battery replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hopefully a quickie, the key fob battery needs replacing it tells me.

Can you tell how to get to the battery in the fob with the removable slide key, it's the black and chrome type fob.

Also, what battery type I need.

Many thanks

You need to take the key out and use a thin screwdriver to pop the rear off from the place where the key has just come from. The battery is either a 2025 or 2032 but they are in essence interchangeable.

@Corbarwolf- how to video below.

It's quite easy to remove the back cover, and get the battery out.

Correct battery is CR2032.

CR2025 is a thinner battery.

Brilliant, thank you gents.

I changed mine again the other day (it seems to eat Duracell CR2032s) and I can just unclip it at the side with a plastic trim tool without pressing anything down the emergency key slot or taking the emergency key out.

My L&K (kessy equiped) was registered in Dec. 2017. I've been getting the "Replace key fob battery" message few days ago for the 2nd time.

Does a battery replacement every 2 years looks normal to you? 🤔

I never had to change the key fob battery on my previous Mk2 (not Kessy equiped), which I kept for 6 years. 😐

Thanks for your feedbacks.

It's perfectly normal. 👍

I'll post this here but it refers to my other VAG car.

Had a battery warning for 'only a few days' and then the key wouldn't lock the car. Took the battery out, reseated it and then it did lock.

However this must been using the final gasps of breath as then it was totally dead.

Time to bring out the totally unused second key - also dead! Hmmm.

No problem as I'd previously purchased some new batteries in both 2025 and 2032 flavours for just such a moment.

The expiry date was in 5 years hence for the 2025 batteries so surprise surprise that neither worked.

Tried a 2032 and that was fine but my normal first ports of call (Screwfix & Toolstation) were both showing zero holding stock.

It was getting late now but luckily the local supermarket had some so no big deal.

What I really didn't expect was either battery to die so fast (or the new ones to not work) - especially as the last time the Superb 'reported' an issue, it lasted a significant amount of time longer.

I know this is an old post, but I thought it's worth sharing that chemists are a great place to get button batteries. They get used in all sorts of medical equipment and usually keep good stock of them as a result.

Also check your local friendly hardware store - Halfords want £7 for a CR1616 for my honda key, local hardware store charged a whopping £1.50

If you are happy buying Bezos yachts, Amazon do a bulk pack of 10 from Varta/Energizer etc which usually have their shelf life printed on the packaging.

I've been slowly going through these four my 5 Skoda keys

Funny you should mention Jeff Bezos and Amazon. Anyway I have just been on there and purchased a rechargeable lithium battery charger and batteries for under £12. Charged them up and put the first one in my Kodiaq Key and all good.

Never trusted Duracell since I was a lot younger and got batteries that I purchased new and sealed that were dead from the start and they’re not as good as they used to be after they sold the company. To me it’s either Energisers or rechargeables.
