Radiator fan higher noise when AC turned on

Featured Replies

Hi, I have Skoda Superb Mk3 2017 (mileage 60.000 km). I am not sure if that was from the beginning or it's just now that I noticed but when you turn on AC, the radiator fan noise increases like twofold, Once you turn AC off, it gets to regular engine noise.

Is that a normal thing, or I need to service the AC system. It was not serviced yet.

Yes, and? I mean, when you turn the AC on, you also start one of the radiator fans.

I meant it sounds very noisy, like double the sound of engine.

Fan speed will increase when turning on the AC especially during warmer months of the year. If its just the noise from the extra fan rotation your hearing then that is normal. Just make sure its not rubbing on a cowling or shroud due to movement from the extra speed.

The other thing to note is that, Yes!! You also need your AC serviced at that age if it has not been touched from new until now.

Don't worry its perfectly normal. When you turn your A/C on, especially in the recent hot weather, the radiator fan goes into overdrive to keep the condensor cool. Externally it can sound like a jet engine starting. You may find it cycles on and off (it does on the fabia)

So long as you're getting nice cool air in the cabin, there's absolutely no reason to "service" your a/c.

What is not normal is that your radiator fan would have been running on the slow speed before turning on the aircon.

But then I dont know what country you are posting from it might be very hot there.

In 15 years of driving Skodas I have never been aware of the cooling fan cutting in aside from when using the aircon or latterly DPF regens.

I have, once, after 3 hours in a motorway traffic jam, stop going at 0 to 10 mph.

That rather depends on whether the OP has a diesel or petrol engine. Not abnormal with petrol engines in traffic in warm weather, in my experience.

Good point Wino.
