Single mass flywheel

Featured Replies

Anyone changed to a single mass flywheel conversion.

Just starting to get the clutch release bearing noise very faint but i have started to notice.

Looking at receipts last time it was a luk flywheel and clutch kit.

Was thinking of going single mass conversion.

Any thoughts? Pros or cons

The short answer is that it's a bad idea.

The common rail engines were engineered from the outset to work with a DMF and take advantage of the reduced vibration and shock loads it allows. As a result internal moving parts, crankshaft especially, are smaller and lighter than they'd need to be to handle a SMF, and would be at risk of breaking if you installed a DMF.

On top of that it's going to be rather unpleasant from a refinement point of view.

I thought the 1.6TDi was OK with a conversion but the 2.0TDi really don't like it?

Not sure which engine the OP has though...

The 1.6 was actually converted by VAG. If you go to the dealer now they supply the early ones that had a DMF with a single mass and appropriate clutch - i think there is also a software update to accommodate the change as well (something to do with the torque characteristics). As for anything common rail - just don't - the tolerances and characteristics of the injection cycle coupled with the higher injection pressures will lead to all sorts of issues within the power train.

Erm, I thought the 1.6 CR was OK to convert but the 2.0CR isn't...

For clarity, both the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI in the Superb 2 are common rail.

Mines is a 2.0tdi 170bhp. Was just a thought. We never used to have these issues back in the days

Obviously the 1.6 is ok as VAG convert them anyway - my bad, brain wasn't fully functioning this morning when i typed that out :D:D
