Sat nav updates from eBay

Featured Replies

Local route knowledge is great although I now tend to get a bit lost around Bridgwater as it has changed so much.

I do do runs out occasionally to refresh certain routes making sure that things haven't changed too much with either Google or Waze to hand .

Sorry if this is an old question - I did a quick search but found nothing relevant...

...has anyone here bought Sat nav updates off eBay? If so, how did it work out for you? Were the sellers reliable? Did the software go ok for you?

Would be v interested  to know your experiences.

Yes just bought a 32GB SD card with 21/22 maps on from Ebay £29.99. Works a treat. Only had a 16GB card before and couldn't get the latest updates on the card, so thought might as well get the bigger card. There are ways of getting the maps on smaller cards by deleting certain files like language files, but for £30 didn't think it worth the hassle when the maps are getting bigger anyway.

Interesting. Worst case scenario, you got an extra Skoda SD card for under 30 quid...😉.

The question is how much would a brand new card cost from a dealer?

You will have to contact a dealer to find out. Think it depends on the dealer how much they charge.

I was quoted £180 today which is why I just signed up to this forum

That’s a lot. So £29.99 off eBay complete with the latest maps and a 32gb Skoda SD card, bargin.

Not only a lot but would be 2 years out of date!

Name and shame!

Some of the sellers on eBay seem to have less than 100% ratings. Barrows the field a bit for me.

I took a punt. The seller had good reviews. If it hadn’t worked out is was £30. As it happens could t be more happy.

Likewise. I got a genuine Skoda 32Gb card which I think originated in Romania for £25. The seller is UK based and the card arrived in 48hr via Royal Mail. The map is full Europe, works fine but is last year's.  I feel an update coming on this week.

Just be aware there are some cloned cards with the part numbers of a 32Gb card on eBay, and they're only 16Gb.

Yeah I paid £29.99 and got the latest maps. Either way a huge saving on the Skoda pricing. I don’t think they stock them as the maps would go out of date before they are sold so I think they are made to order hence the ridiculous price equivalent to a couple of hours of Labour.

I've checked and it seems to be genuine Skoda and 32Gb (well, 29Gb in reality) The maps supplied are the latest, 2021/22.   It shows the Caernarfon by-pass which is still under construction.  Conclusion: good buy!

32gb is the unformatted capacity. Once formatted you always loose a bit for the file system and partition information. Also 1mb equals 1024bytes and 1024mb equals 1gb. Some manufacturers use 1000 as the multiplier not 1024.

Nearly all HDD, SSD and SD card manufacturers use 1000 as the multiplier, but most OSs use 1024 which is why there is such a large difference between the size of storage device yu buy and the reported capacity  when installed and formatted (the format data is much less than the apparent 'lost' capacity).
