VRS Road Noise

Featured Replies

Had my VRS about 3 months now and just looking for some advice please, when I was doing my research I was well aware that the road noise was not shall we say one of its stronger points but still been surprised how sensitive it is to certain road surfaces. Newer surfaces seem fine but older rougher ones really seem to highlight the lack of sound proofing.

Now the other issue is when I bought the car it was fitted with bridgestones which I know from my last car how rubbish they are for road noise so how much might it be those and how much be the car?

They are getting somewhat worn so I will need to replace them at some point in the near future, does anyone have any tips on the best tyres for road noise to go with the VRS?

Michelin PS4 are very quiet. Just had a pair put on the front of mine.

However they don't exactly inspire confidence in their grip and handling so far. Now whether that's because I've got the OEM Bridgestones on the rear I don't know.

I still prefer Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics either 2 or 3 for grip and handling and they're not bad for noise, the 2s are worse for fuel than the 3s.

I'm not going to replace the rear one's just yet in case I decide to get shot of this nightmare of a car.

I took my bridgestones off my vrs wagon for this very reason ,replaced with avon zv7s ,transformed the car so much quieter now ,the bridgestones seemed like they were made out of concrete ,other tyre makes are available haha 🤪

The Octavia VRS MkIII is a loud car compared to the my MkII. My Superb is much quieter in comparison but the tyres are higher profile.

If you get the tracking checked, I suspect you will find it is out of kilter. Get it done on a Hunter 4x4 alignment machine at a dealer (who have the proper VRS alignment settings) and it will drive a lot better and quieter.

I changed from Michelin PilotSport 4, which were slightly noisier than the previous Continental PremiumContacts, to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5, which so far I’ve found the best of the class. This is in 225/40 R18 Y (92) size, fitted in May. Cost £87 ish each fitted at ATS Euromaster, purchased with a discount from blackcircles.com.

Thanks for all these tips, very helpful and plenty to go on when I replace my tyres.

Seems I should hopefully notice a good improvement in road noise.

Would love to see what would happen to the VRS if it was kitted out with Dynamat or other soundproofing.

I'm reluctant to do it myself as I know I'd damage the door cards and other panels while taking them out.

It would be amazing to have the best of both worlds - the looks and power of the VRS with the insulation closer to a VW.

Another vote for Goodyear Asymmetric 5, make sure they have right amount of air in them for best results, I added recommended for 4 people. The Bridgestones it came with were garbage in comparison. I have also done a fair bit of noise insulation in boot, under rear seat but still not got around to adding the mass loaded vinyl I bought a year and a half ago.. I also haven't touched the door panels, and the buzzing noise in right door panel decelerating between 3k and 2k without using pedal seems to have temporarily vanished.

Thanks for the tip on the Goodyear’s, that’s the thing I’m not after the absolute best grip performance but trying to reduce the road noise as much as possible

I heard a good trick is to do a before and after drive (at speed) with the boot empty vs full (usually of holiday stuff) to see if that makes a difference. The biggest thing is still the tyres though. Annoyingly road surfaces in the UK are generally very bad, it is only when you get to good tarmac you really notice the difference. I also did silentcoat under the bonnet and bought the skoda cover to go over it which may have helped a bit. Mine is all just silentcoat to stop vibration with closed cell foam over the top. Without the mass loaded vinyl it is not finished yet. https://www.deadening.co.uk have loads of stuff.

Another vote for Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5. Great value, perform well, reasonably quiet. I don't think any tyre of the same size will produce a night and day difference to what you already have though.

My avon zv7s were night and day difference to the extremly noisy even at low speed bridgestones made my vrs estate so much nicer to be in

The default bridgestones were so bad, I didn't really believe it until I changed to the as5s
