Superb MK3 - Ticking/Window popping sound while driving

Featured Replies

Good day all,

Recently I just got a 2018 Superb MK3 with 20,000 miles on it, the drive has been Superb, everything about it is fantastic.

However, a thing that has been bugging me is a ticking / window popping sound whenever I'm above 25 mph (40kmh). This only comes towards the driver side, directly next to my ears, and the sounds isn't comfortable.

I've been trying to rectify this for the past 2 weeks, by going through this forum, other car forums / youtube videos etc, but was not able to identify the root cause.

I have tried to:

1) Lubricate with Silicone on all 4 Door Seals

2) Lubricate the side mirrors (not sure why I did this, because I just felt it was coming from there, but it didn't work)

3) Apply Grease to the door hatch (driver side door)

4) Apply Tape to the door striker (drive side)

5) Used a rubber mallet to hit the door striker (God knows why I did that, watched a youtube video and I was desperate, no damages incurred in the process)

I literally have to increase the volume of my music in order to 'camouflage' the popping sounds. Irregardless of the weather/temperature, the popping sounds still occur, this is driving me bonkers.

I have no lose items in my vehicle, hence I am uncertain what is triggering the noise. I have sent my vehicle to the Car Dealer, but they have failed to find the noise.

Sometimes I feel it may come from the A Pillar or B Pillar or inside the driver door compartment area, some have said the Fuel Lines as well?? I have no clue where else to look for, I may end up searching these areas if its my last resort.

I would appreciate some help if anyone has experienced this issue, and how to resolve this.

Thank you.

Anyone can help me on this ?

Recently tried a few things:

1) fully wind down Driver side window, but ticking sounds still occur at driver side portion

2) tried to open sunroof, ticking sounds still occur at driver side portion

3) opened the a pillar & b pillar, couldn't find anything that would trigger a ticking sound

4) folded my mirrors in while driving...still ticking sound occurs

5) pressed my hand against the driver side window glass...but ticking sound still occurs

6) used Gummipledge for all door seals, sound still occurs

Sound is still there..appears to be getting worst...louder and more frequent...I haven't changed anything in my car and haven't done any recent servicing.

The sound occurs regardless of the temperature and day or night.

Anyone can help me on this ?

Is it constant and rhythmic or a bit more random?

Try buttons for the window switches, mine buzz, rattle and make noises when I'm driving.

@Patent Its constant, everytime when hit above 25 mph (40kmh), the noise comes. Every 1 minute or so the noise occurs.  It sounds like a large ' Raindrop ' landing on your sunroof, thats how it sounds like.  But its coming from the A Pillar / driver window side.

@Pagan-Image Yes i've tried all the window switches, none of them are making any buzzes / rattles,  i applied pressure on the driver door as well, but couldnt find any rattle/buzz. Even the driver door handle (inside) doesn't have any rattle.  Hence i do not know where the noise is coming from.

I recently applied felt tape around the entire the inner driver door frame, but the noise was still there.

If you look in the Octavia IV forum, someone is having a similar issue, but it is related to the SOS and multimedia systems.

@Pagan-Imageyes I've searched this whole forum from other models as well. Tried and tested on other areas besides the door side area...infotainment area etc... but can't find the root cause.

I drove safely with my driver car door opened (on straight road with no cars), the sound still occurs. Hence I'm not sure where exactly it may be....could be A pillar or B pillar..or under carriage...but im unsure.

May be a silly suggestion, but isn’t simply the ´speed alert’ system set to 25 mph?

@Bap33 thanks for the suggestion, but didnt work.

i've actually tried this method by @Andysuew      but it didnt work for me. the ticks/popping noise were still there even after trying this method.

  • Author

@Jrlim actually suggested this method, i would try later on to see if it would work...

Tried the above method but didn't manage to fit the boards inside as the headliner is securely attached to the cassette. Any advise on how you went about it @Jrlim

ill be opening the driver side A Pillar and placing some foam inside that area, as well as the driver side headliner which links to the A Pillar.

If anyone has does this before or has any other advise for me, would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The best analogy would be a Raindrop that lands on your windscreen.

I am experiencing this 'raindrop', whenever I am travelling above 25mph, it only occurs on my driver side (headliner/A-Pillar/Window) area.

Went to dealer & to a third party workshop, both were unable to find the root cause.

It occurs every 15 seconds, hence I am going mental, I can't keep blasting my music all the time, hence I need help on this.  :whew:

Sound still persists...anyone can advise ?

Have you tried turning off the infotainment completely? It could be a pop coming from the speaker(s) - i.e. electrical problem

Is this rpm-dependant, or not at all?

Not at all, as long as the vehicle is above 25mph the noise occurs.  irregardless of rough/bumpy roads, the noise still occurs.

on a straight smooth road, noise occurs as well.

Hmmm. Even harder to make suggestions... 🤔

Get a passenger to listen while you drive, they may be able to pinpoint the noise more easily than you can.

Or ask someone to drive your car and be the passenger. I think no one can identify this ticking sound better than you...

Appreciate everyone's suggestion.

Went to another workshop ytd, the mechanic says its definately coming from the Headliner (Driver side/A-Pillar/Sunroof) area. A screw/bolt or something which is causing some friction against the metal frame.

Made an appointment next week get the headliner removed and for them to check what's causing the noises. He advised would take at least 3 days or less.

Wil revert with the update. thanks all.
