Steering wheel creaking

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Skoda owners and others!

I bought an used 2014 Skoda Spaceback 1.2 tsi. After some driving (approx. 150 miles) the steering wheel started to make a creaking noise. I think there is some wire rubbing against plastic covers? I do not think it is a big problem but I find it very unpleasant. There should be a video on this post to tell you exactly what I am talking about.

Any suggestion what I shall do? Thanks in advance!

Could be the same known problem that affected Fabias 2013-2014. Inner track rod ball joints drying out/rusting due to wrong grease being used by supplier. Aka tie rod and steering rod.

Subject to a TSB (tech service bulletin) and track rods replaced foc under warranty. (FYI inner track rod end is located inside the steering rack)

To see if there is a TSB applicable to your specific car either ask your dealer or use ERWIN, though there is a cost of €7 (for one hours access) to use this online service.

Thank you @xman for your response. The car has currently 137.000km on dash and production year is 2014 so do you think, if there is a TSB, it would still go through it? Or should I just visit a work shop or try and do it by myself?

You need to confirm that is the problem before changing anything.

The car is 7+ years old and out of the 100,000 km warranty window so unless you have a full dealer service history or had a skoda extended warranty, its unlikely skoda wants to know.

Fortunately track rods are not too expensive and I dont imagine it takes a good mechanic very long to change them. You will need the car to have a wheel alignment if these are changed though.

But first get a mechanic to confirm where the problem is.

My 2013 Rapid has made the same noise since I bought it used in February. I initially thought it could be a clock spring issue, but all of the buttons work fine and it doesn’t seem to cause any problems. I assume it’s just a worn bearing or plastic part that’s making the noise. I’m just ignoring it for now as it doesn’t seem to be getting worse at all. I’ll let you know if it does.

UPDATE:

I just picked up my Rapid from a annual service at Skoda dealership. They took a look at the wheel noise but they had just couple minutes time for it after the service. The mechanic told that the problem could be caused by the rotary coupling unit. I will be in contact with the salesman after this problem came just in a day after buying the car. I will keep you updated.

Thanks that would be great. Hopefully it’s nothing too major!

Thanks! That’s good to know. I’ll get mine into my dealer to have them look at it.
