SEL-Exec Combi tdi 4x4 … not happy with 19” wheels!!!

Featured Replies

Got my very very nice 68 reg 190 tdi dsg 4x4 Superb Combi coming on for a couple of months ago from Carrs Skoda, Bridgewater, & gradually getting used to such a small motor after parting sorrowfully  with the 10 years older VW California campervan.

As a SEL-Exec it came shod with very posh metallic grey Trinity 19” wheels and brand new 235/40/Z19 Falkens.

However … 40 profile looks so fragile & apart from that I always convert to all weather tyres … 2x4 zero grip & 4x4 zero grip is what you get in poor icy or snow covered situations. The Camper was preceded by a 65 reg Octy Scout allweathers shod which proved great on snow & ice. Obviously not set up for anything adventurous off metalled roads I do venture albeit cautiously into forest tracks and the odd unmetalled track . So 40 profile tyres … rather not! And that’s apart from the relatively harsh ride over potholes, projecting drains etc.

Anyway, hopefully someone lusting after my wheels will come along in a month or so time to buy & I can then convert to a tiny upsize on 17” wheels with 225/55 tyres as suggested in an earlier thread here rather than the 215/55s. Tyre of choice is the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3.

Any thoughts on such a proposed change?

yes 17" wheels better for comfort,

i dont understand why manufacturers keep going bigger  & bigger every year  with wheels/tyres on family cars, might be alright on a smooth race track but not ideal for the potholed roads thats the norm nowadays.

i can remember when 13" & 14" wheels was the normal on most new cars

tyres will obviously be cheaper and if your diy minded, you can even  change 55 series  tyres yourself, no chance of doing that with 35 series

i take it u don't have DCC suspension?

the ride with 19s is very comfortable when paired with DCC, even with my car lowered on Eibach springs.

also, a number of owners have switched from the factory 235/40R19 to 245/40R19 tyres.

the extra 5mm sidewall thinkness adds to more cushioning of bumps, potholes and road noise.

40 profile is great for flat showroom surfaces, and billiard table smooth roads, but absolutely useless on many country roads with rutted, cracked and badly patched tarmac.

Even DCC cannot mask the surface where there are multiple changes in surface within contact patch length of tyre.

The correct 17 inch tyres for 190 TDI are

215/55 ZR17 94W on 7Jx17 ET40 rims

The Goodyear vector 4season Gen 3 will have a higher load rating of 98, but thats not such a bad thing with the combi version.  Should be from about £115 per tyre.

Changed tyre price to match a web price

16" wheels will fit if the front discs have a diameter of 312mm or less. This would allow much cheaper tyre sizes such as 215/60R16. On narrow 6Jx16 ET40 rims (from the Superb MK1) the spare wheel might fit flush in the spare wheel well.

However, the test appears to be biased towards the Goodyear as it was a Goodyear test track and the Vredestein won more tests than the Goodyear. I would place the Vredestein Quatrac 6 in 1st place. The Vredestein was unfairly downgraded from 1st place to 2nd place by pretending that the Vredestein is more expensive than the Goodyear, when in fact the Vredestein is usually cheaper than the Goodyear. For example, on camskill in size 215/60R16 the Vredestein is currently listed at £82.05 whereas the Goodyear is listed at a far more expensive £113.90

Don't blame you mate; a Superb on 17" is the most comfortable car I've ever travelled in.

But the smaller the wheels diameter is, the less sharper the steering becomes. I really feel the difference between my 19" summer wheels and my 17" winter wheels.

There's many variables involved.

The steering is going to feel less sharp with winter tyres on narrower 6.5Jx17 ET41 rims than UHP (Ultra High Performance) summer tyres such as Michelin Pilot Sport 4 215/55R17 98Y XL on wider 7Jx17 ET40 rims. Not only that, but the 215/55R17 will be more comfortable and more resistant to pothole damage.

Interesting! rather different pressures here!
https://www.carsguide.com.au/skoda/superb/tyre-pressure

NB in particular the variations for the rear!

I’ve got a Sportline 280 on 19” wheels without dcc and I find it no less comfortable than my previous mk2 was on 17’s.

Cant see what all the fuss is about personally, the roads are crap so if you want a smoother ride buy a hover board cos no amount of tyre or wheel changes is gonna improve the roads around here! (And I speak from experience as I’m also local and Carrs is where mine goes for service etc…)

That guide doesn't seem right.

Maybe use Skoda's recommended tyre pressures instead.

So now up in N Wales & thanks to Skoda’s own Sat Nav’s quirky ideas of route options have endured lurching  worryingly & carefully along additional miles & miles of potholed minor roads …. such a small distance between tyre treads & wheel rims! 🥴😤

Will look to change in a few weeks time …. The Superb will not look quite so superb, but I’ll travel with more confidence over a mixture of surfaces!

I’ve done 13000 miles in the last year on the 19’s and honestly had no issues even with the pot holes roads on a variety of surfaces.

one thing I will say is since changing to Michelin pilot sport 4 there is noticeably more rubber stuck out sideways to protect the rims from accidental kerbing (which I did in the early days on the front left with the original fitted tyres…)

My advice is don’t bother changing, just got some decent rubber and enjoy it the way it was meant to look, 17’s will look silly on a car this big

Having seen 17” wheels on an estate I agree not right! Esptge narrower 215 tread. But still up to look at 18” rims!

So …. Change of mind and got some 2h Audi 17” rims. These and the 225/55/17 101W Michelin CrossClimate 2 new tyres are down at the tyre centre waiting to be fitted. Head ruled over heart … my lovely grey 19” trinity (?) wheels with almost new Falken tyres will be up for sale soon assuming all goes well.

link doesnt work mate ... i really would like to go to 65 profile AT tires   without any rubbing

I have a set of ski trip and winter wheels for mine. 17in Tiguan wheels are the exact size for the Superb. 90 percent of the time I prefer how it drives on these until I put the DCC into sport and press on and then the 19s work so much better. 3 of my 19in wheels are a bit wonky too which is another downside of the 19s, much more prone to pothole damage etc but all happened before I bought the car so not much I can do. I'll go to one set of 18s with all seasons or a new set of 19s with 245/40/19 next. I do like the extra sleeper effect with 17s on the 280.

For the Octavia MK2 Scout, you could try 215/60R16 on 6J or 6.5J rims with an offset between ET43 and ET50.

Perhaps rims such as 6Jx16 ET43 from the Karoq, or 6.5Jx16 ET43 from the Audi A3.

The standard Octavia MK2 Scout uses 225/50R17 on 7Jx17 ET50 rims...hence with the narrower 215/60R16 tyre changing the offset by 7mm. This will keep the outside of the tyre's tread in roughly the same position in the wheelarch.

Are they ET44? Also which tyres have you got?

I’m thinking of getting some winter wheels, debating where it’s worth it in the long run though

They are 7Jx17 ET40 which is the official winter rim size for fitting chains etc.

Wearing cross climates at the moment. More than up to the job with 4x4 as well.
