No cool air - faulty flap?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Within the last month I have noticed that when the aircon kicks in, the flow from the vents goes very weak after a few seconds.  I have just found out that the flap behind the glovebox will not open up automatically.  I can open and close it by hand when the aircon is on but if the aircon is turned off it will close itself and can't be opened by hand until the aircon is turned on again.  Would this be a fault with the motor?  I don't mind replacing it myself but I cannot see how to get to it.

Might just need the flaps resetting. There's a few videos on youtube like this one

Just ran it through a couple of resets and it didn't move at all.

You've got real buttons for Climatronic; try 5 to 10 minutes of flapperobics. May not work, but at least it's free and easy to do.

Just did it around 20 to 30 times and still nothing.  Its still happy to close by itself but not open.

Ok, I was able to find someone with a fancy code reader. It would seem there were a number of fault codes related to the air flaps. After resetting them all, this is what’s left.

Looks like it is possibly a motor fault?

Yes...flap motor is faulty. Sorry, it's a bit of a pain to get to but it can be changed. It's a rare failure so sorry you've had to take this one on.

The flap on my old 406 got stuck closed. The car steamed up and stayed steamed up. My somewhat primitive solution back then was a full frontal flapectomy.

Things were better after that with no more steaming up, and the air con did work, but I guess it was probably not at full efficiency in all situations and of course it was no longer possible to close it when desired because of obvious air pollution.

It’s booked in for a service on the 22 September so i might just get them to do it if I can’t get to it.  Thanks for the help. 👍

Well, I finally got a quote.  £470 to replace the flap motor.  I guess its quite a lot of disassembly to get access to it.  I was also told that Skoda used two different types of motor and they won't know what one is in my car until they take it apart.  Also only one type of motor is currently in stock.  Why did they have to make it so difficult? 😕

...so they can rip you off...!

ROFL....okay, tell your dealer to go into Elsa and stop being so ruddy lazy as it has all of the build info in there. It will give the part numbers for your flap motors.....sorry, I hate Lazy dealers (and there are many of them).

Well, turns out it's the cheaper option as the motor is the one they have in stock.  Should be done tomorrow.  Got a brand new Fabia DSG as a courtesy car so i'm not in a rush. 😀

After much money it is now fixed.  They also updated the software that fixed a light fault message.

This just started happening to me in my Mk4 VRS Wagon in the last few days. These are the first few hot days in the 6 months since I bought the car: Autumn, Winter, Spring were cool but now it is 36 degrees in mid-summer.

It's only 6 months into the 5 year warranty so it should not cost me anything but I have to wait for three weeks over Christmas and New Year until I can get an appointment.

Some things I noticed:

a) Adjusting settings of Auto, Sync, Fan speed, vent flaps etc made no difference.

b) Turning the aircon off caused the flap to open up so I got full volume air - except it was not air-conditioned so it quickly became warm.

c) Turning the aircon back on caused the flap to close but there was also a very loud sharp click after a seconds from near the glove box. I have heard other Mk 4 owners describe a similar noise associated with a fault in their SOS systems. I wonder what type of device does that? A relay - but it seems too loud for that?

I suppose it does not help that I have run the aircon in Auto mode 100% of the time through winter and spring. I would not do that in other cars but this one buries the setting 2 or 3 levels deep in a touchscreen so it is easier to leave it on Auto 21 degrees year-in, year-out.

That calibration video above sounded like good stuff but it does not seem to be applicable to the Mk4.

Now the car is all touchscreen and it does not seem to register two simultaneous presses of those two buttons to get into the calibration mode.

I found two other threads that describe a very similar problem with Superbs, except there it is possibly associated with icing up after a longer running period:

After a 4 week delay due to Christmas + New Year I was able to get Skoda to look at this last week and they found a loose cable that was fouling the flap that redirects the air. They fixed this - under warranty of course - and now the aircon works great.
