Disable headlight washers?

Featured Replies

Hey,

anyone disabled them or knows how to? Is there any other way than coding? Can it be coded off or add a delay before they activate?

I usually keep my lights clean myself. Washers usually just make a mess without any cleaning :)

In my previous car we removed the fuse. Perhaps you can do that?

You never drive on dirty roads? I find that's when headlight washers make a positive difference, and they only fire every fourth time I use the screen wash, when the headlights are on.

I really keep my lights clean to make them light up the road more. Usually the washers dont do any good job and just sprays water all over the car. I dont mind them when its raining etc.

But when i just use them to clean the dust off from windshield, i dont want them to spray all over the car.

I thought I saw a lot of water on the bonnet once and wondered how it got there. Is it really as irregular as you say? That would explain why I only saw it once.

But when I looked down near the lights I couldn't see where the water could be coming from. The jets must be hidden well, or else the whole thing was my imagination.

It was much more obvious on the last car I had that had headlamp washers.

Good question!

Also want to deactivate the function.

Likewise, very interested if someone has a semi-permanent fix for this, like some above it's nice to have them sometimes but at other times it can be rather annoying.

Aren’t headlight washers obligatory with some types of headlights?

On this page : https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/16423/

an Octavia owner in 2018 found a way to control this by changing the delay after pressing the windscreen washers before the headlamp washers came on - from 0 msec to 200 msec.

Perhaps this approach can also be applied to the Mk IV - for those who apply coding changes.

Pretty sure that is correct for UK/Europe, thankfully not a requirement in NZ

Now, that would be a better idea....IF I had access to such a device as every 4th time or whatever it is seems way too often. I wonder if the dealer would be able to sort this?

Sorry, I didn’t know where the OP’s location (Fi) was...

No worries, you were spot on to mention it - there's so many nanny state rules in a lot of countries now that it's good to have a reminder that modifications that are legal for some are absolutely not in other jurisdictions.  👍  🙂

(Not 100% sure but I believe it's only a requirement in the UK for HID and LED headlights)

Maybe it would be better to continue discussion in the Coding thread

It was only a rule for Xenons, because their beam can get distorted by dirt and blind people.

My last few cars had headlight washers and to me work very well.

Yes; plasma discharge units and possibly LED.

Never ever noticed any that made the cars headlights perform worse if the windscreen needed a scoosh and the headlights get scooshed.   If temps are that low that the windscreen is not worth scooshing then the lights are not getting done.  As it is the lights nozzle freezing is common.

Yes cars with certain types of headlights it is law to have washers.the reason is dirty headlights distorts the headlights.on skoda I think if  they are fitted with led and if the light they omit more than 2000 Lumnis they must have washers.so in other words it is safety feature .so they do not blind oncoming cars.so please think carefully before disabling the washers.hids lights and xeonon are thevsame( sorry about the spelling)

Have you tried to turn off the head lights before washing? It worked on Golf 6 :)

The same dirt/ road spray that requires you to wash the windscreen to see also obscures the headlights. The headlight washers on my previous yeti that had xenons and my current Kodiaq with LED’s keep the light clean with no problems.
Perhaps if they are making a mess, it’s down to the screenwash used.

I did this tweak on my Mark 3 Octavia, it  meant I could choose when/if the headlight washers came on by how long I help the windscreen washers on - seems the best compromise to me?

Same here. It’s one of the better VCDS mods to do. No experience of the Mk4 though to advise on how to execute (if it can be).

In new Octavia you cannot turn off lights without stopping.

Actually my current MK7.5 golf has this delay feature now. I have to press washers function for 2 seconds before it activates the light washers. I do sometimes use it, but 80% of windshield washer usage i DONT need the headlight washer to spray all over my car.

Baffles me why people want to disable the washers. because of getting a bit of screen wash on there cars .yet don't mention why the washers  are on there cars for?they are there to wash the muck and grime off the headlight and this stops the lights from distorting and blinding other drivers.please look  it up and it will tell you.it is law for cars to have these type of headlights to have these washers for.

I can assure you that some cars with halogen headlights have headlight washers; I've owned two of them (different makes).
