Anyone know whether the spare tyre from a Mark II will fit the Mark IV?

Featured Replies

Probably a stupid question, but will the spare tyre we purchased for our Mark II, which is still sitting pristine and unused in our 2011 Octavia Estate, fit in our new Mark IV Hatchback?  The size on the spare is 195/ 65 R15.  The new car will have the standard SE L wheels (17" Rotare Aero)  It looks like the new wheels and the current spare both have 5 holes.  If it's relevant, the old car has 225/45 r17 wheels on it.

We are trading the old estate in and still have the original inflation kit which we can put back in.  We bought a spare tyre as we prefer having one.  Neither of the available spare options for the IV are the same size and as what we have but we don't want to buy a new one if we have a perfectly good one already.

We are probably picking it up in a week or so, it was on a boat from Germany last weekend 🙂

Thanks for any help.

A 10 year old tyre is not perfectly good; it's close to the end of its life, even if it's never turned a wheel. 195/65 R15 will be 2.8% faster rolling than a 205/60 R16, and skinnier in width - 7.68 in rather than 8.07 in. ET (offset) needs investigating, too. Inflation kits are certainly mostly useless. I'd flog the wheel to someone less fussy and get a new spare.

Thanks for that. 👍  I reckoned we'd need a new one but husband insisted it would be fine.  Honestly after 10.5 years, the cost of the wheel is well absorbed and I'd just leave it in the trade in.  His next option is to flog it on ebay but who can be bothered with the hassle?  Not me that's for sure!

Thanks again.

Not one puncture in 10 and half years is pretty good though, I wonder what the record is?

As it's only going to be a spare, I'd personally have no worries about 'using' it for another few years. After all, it's only likely to be used cautiously to get you home or to a tyre place to get the other one sorted.

To be honest we got a good deal on the car, and he's putting it in to get it properly ceramic coated at a fair cost, I think the extra for the tyre should just be added on for peace of mind in the hope that it never needs used either.  Looking forward to the upgrade but quite sad to see the old car go.  It's never failed an MOT and only needed stuff like new tyres/brake pads and the occasional bulb or washer blade.  Biggest cost was getting the timing belt done.  We really can't complain.

Oh thanks for that link @Wino, it wasn't visible to me when i was typing my previous reply.

Check the diameter of the front brake discs.

The Octavia MK4 might have a minimum of 310mm/312mm diameter front brake discs. If so, a 15" rim won't clear the front brake calipers.

Skoda sell a space saver for the Octavia MK4

Thanks for that Carlston.  There are a couple of choices of spares in the brochure in the UK.  We'll just need to decide and order in what we need.

If a full-size spare wheel isn't listed for the Octavia MK4, it might be worth seeing if the Octavia MK3 full-size spare wheel fits.

Although 205/55R16 has a slightly smaller outside diameter than the standard Octavia MK4 205/60R16 tyre size, the Superb MK3 also used a 205/55R16 spare wheel with it's even bigger 215/60R16 standard tyre size.

Although I think had 1 or 2 punctures in my previous car, a Honda S2000, they were slow leaks and I was able to get them fixed at the tyre shop without swapping the wheels.

Result: in 19 years and 270,000kms, I never removed the spare, or the jack.

I said something similar a few years ago.

I then had 2 punctures in about a month.

To the OP I'd use it as a spare, a space saver is a "Get you home or to the tyre place" wheel. You don't use it for weeks or drive fast on it.

I have had punctures with our other cars and once needed to use the spare - or at least the road service technician did that.

One occurred the day we brought a car back home 13 years ago.. The spare was needed.

Another was with the new Skoda a few months ago. At the end of the first week the tire warming came on. I was taking it in to Skoda anyway so I asked them to look at it and they it was underinflated due to a small puncture which they repaired at no charge. The spare was not used, though.
