Ordered my Scala mid July, still no factory build week

Featured Replies

Ordered mine on 27th February, collected from dealer 26th May. Not too bad, IMO, considering that when I inquired last year I was quoted 9 - 12 months. I added a few factory fit options which I expected would add to the build time. Very pleased with the car. As the Scala is so rare it was difficult to get answers to a lot of questions, let alone a test drive of the model I was interested in, so a couple of early observations:

1. The 1.5TSI engine makes the car a real pleasure to drive. I only got to test drive the 1.0 and although I thought it was almost good enough, it fell slightly short of the torque I was used to in my Golf MK6 1.6TDI. The 1.5TSI matches the 1.6TDI well in this respect.

2. Although the Scala has a 'space saver' (50mph max) spare tyre, the well in the boot floor is actually deep enough for a full size 205/55x16 spare wheel (same as the standard fitment on the SE) so the spare I purchased for the outgoing Golf (to replace the supplied bicycle wheel) drops right in.

Lots more observations but there is probably a better forum to post them.

Looks nice, what trim is it?

I'm assuming the factory goes through making batches of certain trims and you just got lucky that they were building the trim you ordered.

Thanks fossman. It's SE trim in Graphite Grey metallic with Extended Tailgate Glass and Hoedus Alloys. The choice of the alloys was purely practical - I'm getting too old to spend half a day each month on my knees cleaning brake dust off the inside of alloys. The tailgate glass was pure vanity - I thought it looked nice in the pictures. When justifying it to SWMBO, I suggested that it would make the car easier to find if we parked it in a car park full of Scalas. I ducked just in time.

Agree with that. Very pleased with mine (it came with a full sized spare wheel).

Hi John2022, you were fortunate to get the full sized spare. Mine came with a 195/65R15 with "50mph max" stickers on it. I guess it saved them a few cents over supplying a 205/55R16 but it would be good to have the option of a 'full speed' spare when ordering. The 195 will now sit at the back of my garage for the next 10 years, getting in the way. Bit of a waste really.

The Scala owner's manual lists both 195/65R15 fitted to 6Jx15 ET35 and 195/60R16 fitted to 6Jx16 ET35 as winter tyre and rim combinations compatible with snow chains.

195/65R15 and 195/60R16 are both full size tyres and are not space saver tyres.

125/70R18 is an example of a space saver tyre. A space saver tyre can be inflated to a much higher pressure than a full size tyre, such as 4.2Bar (60psi).

Extract from Scala owner's manual

Permitted rim and tyre combinations for mounting snow chains:

Rim dimensions

Tyre dimensions

6Jx15 ET35

195/65R15

6Jx16 ET35

195/60R16

Only use snow chains with links no larger than 13 mm, including locks.

@John2022when you say yours came with a full size spare is that a matching size tyre / wheel to the 4 on the car and the same make of tyre on a steel wheel?

What size?

Yes I believe so, it certainly looked it when I checked it was there after delivery. Its nearly dark now (and chuffing windy)  but I'll check in the morning.  I did specifically ask the dealer (Marshalls of Medway) about it when I ordered the car and they said it would be.

They have been calling them 'Full size' for a long time.  They save space but are not Space Savers as in Skinny tyres.

That does not mean the full or identical size to the tyre / wheel it will be going on to replace.

The 'car card' generated by the online car builder (and the blurb produced by the dealer when I signed the order) says "Space-saving spare wheel". A bit of a joke really, as it saves a whole 10mm between the bottom of the boot floor and the top of the spare wheel. Not sure what use this space could be used for - a Frizbee maybe?

& on other models there is room to fit the Full size wheel / rim on the car and not push the floor up.

You might need to put the wheel off the car in there anyway, deflated or inflated.

Others might not fit under the boot floor and have space.    It is the VW Group / Skoda, they do Spares in Sizes to be near enough for many models / trims across the brands.

It actually saves only 7mm, if comparing the 195/65R15 fitted to a 6J rim with a 205/55R17 fitted to a 6J rim.

This is because the actual inflated width of a 195/65R15 tyre fitted to a 6J rim is 201mm, and the actual inflated width of a 205/55R16 tyre fitted to a 6J rim is 208mm.

However, if comparing the 195/65R15 fitted to a 6J rim with a 205/50R17 fitted to a 6.5J rim the saving is 13mm.

Actual inflated width of tyres

195/65R15 fitted to 6J rim 201mm

205/55R16 fitted to 6J rim 208mm

205/50R17 fitted to 6.5J rim 214mm

Well the spare wheel I have is Skoda’s “Standard Spare Wheel” corresponding to “the dimensions of the wheels mounted on the vehicle,” their wording from the handbook. It is not the skinny “emergency wheel” and does not carry an obvious speed of distance limitation. However it is a 15 inch wheel carrying a 195/65 R15 91H Kinenergy Eco tyre produced by Kontrol of Hungary, compared to the 16 inch 205/55R16 91V Goodyear fitted as standard. So the spare probably corresponds to the standard size fitted to a baseline line model. It has a marginally lower load and speed rating than the main tyres but nothing worth worrying about. I assume that used as a spare and driven accordingly it is safe. I’ll speak to the dealer to find out more.

The spare wheel fitted to my Scala, delivered in mid April, is a Hankook and - I had just a quick glance - looks identical to the ones in each corner…

From the Skoda Scala parts catalogue, there are three possible steel rims available for use as a spare wheel.

195/65R15 would fit the 6Jx15 ET35 5/100 57.1 steel rim, 195/60R16 would fit the 6Jx16 ET35 5/100 57.1 steel rim, and 125/70R18 would fit the 3.5Jx18 ET38 5/100 57.1 steel rim.

I asked the service manager of the dealers where I bought the car if the 15in spare was correct and safe to use. Here is the reply....

this is indeed correct, as the wheel is seen as a temporary tyre, you will have 1 inch less on the rim and a higher profile tyre on to compensate for this, that is standard in all our vehicles and is seen as a full size spare.

It's better than a tin of squirty stuff anyhow! I have not taken the thing out so I don't know if it is speed limited .

Car arrived at the UK port this week and I received my finance documents to sign today.

Just waiting for a delivery date now, the registration date is showing as 12th June so could be with me a week on Monday.

Update regarding the full size spare - The spare from a VW Golf DOES NOT fit the Scala!

Having removed the wheels to put a smear of copperslip around the edge of the centre bore to stop rust from 'welding' them together, I offered up the spare only to find that the lug bolt holes don't line up. It seems that the VW Golf has a 5x112 PCD and the Scala 5x100. Lucky I tried, it would have been uber embarrasing to have found out only when I needed it.

Look what got delivered this morning (sorry for the bad photo).

It looks very good. Enjoy!

Quick question, is there a way to switch to Android Auto without having to select Menu first?

On my previous Octavia it had an App button.

I don’t know. Mine is a SE version without sat nav so the screen layout is different. I have to connect via Smartlink each time. It does give you the option of either apple or android, at least the first time round.
