Front Assist and automatically activated (False alarm) in a busy Centre London.

Featured Replies

It was really dreadful. I was driving down the City road toward  Old street roundabout yesterday and all of a sudden there was big jolt as my stupid car detected some invisible obstacle. This is not the first time it happened. Everytime it was false alarm. Luckily I knew what was it all about and there was no car behind me. I am panicking, if it lead me to a serious incident!!!!

I drove the car rest of the time with this feature turned off from the infotainment system..but there was an annoying tringle mark on the maxidot.

I am wondering if it happens in the motorway or in a busy road, it will be a disaster catastrophe.

Thinking whether i should look for an option to permanently disable it (if there is any ) or i should get this sensor checked up.

Please advise me.

Since you know of the risk you have to do one or both of those of those things if the sensitivity can not be adjusted.

I get the occasional false alarm from the front. But once or twice in the last 2 years it has alerted me to a situation when I was glad it did.

And just the other week I had emergency braking while I was reversing into my tight driveway. To be far I was being a bit hasty about the manoeuvre. But it was a bit of a surprise and took me a moment to work out what had happened.

Can you turn it off without informing your insurance?

I’m pretty sure that on my Superb that option (which is different to what the OP was posting about) can be disabled in the menus. As to the Octavia having the same ability…………..

I would recommend that you keep the Radar detector at the front of the car (the Shiny nose of the Octavia on your FL car or under the grill on the front valance on non-FL models) clean. Dirty on the face of the radar detector may lead to false positives. It's doing its job. Keep it on. Especially in London.

Sure.... manually. It's a driver's aid and I'm sure it will be fine to switch off, however you are giving your insurance company a way of wriggling out of payment in case of total loss as they will state the electronic aids there to assist were switched off. I might suggest keeping it on and seeing if your local Skoda dealer has any firmware updates or TPIs against these false positives.

OK. my car doesn't have any nannywear (unless you count ABS or a switchable traction control), but my insurance certainly does not state that installed nannywear must be used.

No but they will use it against you if they want to get out from paying a claim.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Does anyone know if there is any speed limit where this front assist will not automatically activated? My biggest concern is in motorway where speed limit starts from 50mph. If it comes on automatically  with false alarm the impact will be dangerous.

You can find all of the answers you need in the Skoda Owner's Manual  Page 239.

Good link to the manual and page number.  Requires reading a few times! It is a bit of a mouthful   And also a big document to download on the go to find it.

It seems the operating speed at which actual automatic braking can occur depends if the system thinks the object is stationary or moving.  A few of the most relevant pieces on emergency brake operation ( with operating speed range), quoted below:

"Emergency braking at low speed In the event of a risk of collision in a vehicle speed range of approximately 5 km/h to 30 km/h, the warning light appears on the display  » Fig. 286 and the system initiates automatic braking. "

"Automatic braking - a stationary obstacle If the driver does not respond to the advance warning of the risk of a collision with a stationary obstacle in a speed range of approximately 30 km/h to 60 km/h, the system initiates automatic braking. Information on automatic braking If automatic brake intervention is triggered by the system, the pressure in the brake system increases and the brake pedal cannot be operated with the normal pedal stroke. The automatic braking interventions can be cancelled by pressing the accelerator pedal or by means of a steering intervention."
