skoda fabia sump plug

Featured Replies

Hello do the skoda fabia 1.4 tdi have a sump plug seal?

The copper seal ones?

Thanks

No, it'll be a bolt with a built-in flat washer.

If your 1.4 TDi has an engine code of AMF, BNV, or BNM then you can see the part and code here.

It's a captive steel washer.

OEM part number is N90813202 for the sump bolt including the captive steel washer.

Aftermarket ones are available on ebay for £1.69 including postage.

As you can see below, the specification is M14x1.5x22

Just go to your local hydraulic pipe supplier and ask for a 14mm “Dowty” seal,it’s an aluminium washer with a built in O-ring seal.

And what, add it to the existing captive washer, attempting to create a radial seal onto the smaller-than-thread-size plain shank part of the bolt? (Instead of the designed face seals either side of the washer?)

Or remove the old washer somehow?

Have you done this with this style of plug + washer?

No, remove the old washer as the Dowty seal needs 2 good faces to seal on.If you replace any washer you should never leave the old worn one in place, unless of course it is being used as a shim of some sort.

Dowty washers seal axially.

There is no need for any fancy solutions or even replacing the plug, VAG macining tolerances mean that a plain steel washer will seal against the machined aluminium sump, were it a steel sump with a copper washer the there would be some merit in replacing it, I wouldn't unless its face was damaged.

A steel washer against an aluminium seat is not going to get damaged.

Surely the point of it being a Dowty washer is that it's the rubber bit does some sealing, otherwise how is it better than a flat washer?

Ah, sorry I see what you both mean now that I look at one and feel it up close.

Quite unnecessary though as J.R. says.

A Dowty seal is designed to be fitted on hydraulic connectors (usually in a banjo type) it is a washer with an built in rubber seal so that when the hydraulic pressure in the connection rises it pushes the rubber part of the seal tighter onto it’s mating faces to make it oil tight.

No pressure to speak of in a sump though, unless there's a breather fault.

A Dowty washer would provide an extremely reliable seal but is overkill and the difficulty is compounded by the existing steel washer being captive on the plug.

The problem is that grease monkeys are prone to drop the plug into the oil catch tank, a new one means they don't have to retrieve the old one, the rest of us don't need a new plug at all, some ham-fisted idiots will need a new sump when they overtighten the plug though!

That phrase should be ham forearmed, I have yet to see a ham resemble a fist or vice versa but Popeye forearms do look like hams.
