1 in 5 EV buyers change back to ICE because of hassle.

Featured Replies

  • john999boy changed the title to 1 in 5 EV buyers change back to ICE because of hassle.

So 80% of Californian ev owners didn’t go back to ICE, and people who bought a Fiat were more likely to go back to ICE.
I don’t think that particular survey will mean very much. Buying a Fiat could put a person off travel full stop.

The temperatures in the UK are better for ev use as we don’t get very extreme cold or hot weather.
It’s typical fake news, why not have the title “4 in 5 EV buyers never change back to ICE, due to the benefits” ?

Anyway, to answer your question, If 20% of ev buyers in California give up on electric cars I don’t think it will be higher in the uk.

This is an article written in April this year citing a study that used data from 2012-2018 - a time when the EV infrastructure was in its infancy. I can see why some people would give up on EVs back then, short range, poor public charging, no service centres and the general hassle of being a (very) early adopter. The situation in the UK in 2021 is VERY DIFFERENT - 200 plus mile range is common, thousands of public charging points (more than there are petrol stations) plenty of garages with EV expertise.

This is fake news using out of date data.

4,000 public chargers in Scotland.

SWARCO who now are running the Charge Place Scotland set up on behalf of the Scottish Government have done an Audit of all of them.

Funny then that they can not correctly give the locations on the Map.

Funnily their Operatives or Contractors can not send a signal with the location using GPS so that they are where they should be on the map.

Funnily the Chargers have SIM Cards that send the signals.

Strange that were the Mobile and Wi-fi reception can be poor or intermittent that this is not dealt with using boosters or what ever is required to ensure reliability of service at chargers.

I went back to a petrol car for 4 days last week as i had to carry another adult and 2 children and do 300 plus miles each day.

135 mile range in my e-Corsa would have been too much of a PITA.

It was worth the extra cost of just getting in and going.

Then yesterday a usual 2 hour drive to drop off my Grandchildren then a 90 minute drive home took nearly 6 hours.

That was Road works that added 40 minutes so actually the EV was fine there, then a diversion that needed extra miles done,  that was OK as the route used less electric.

Once they were home i had to charge.

First charger place was Out of Order, next one had a Hybrid Taxi charging on the CCS and it was at 98% and the driver was staying until it was at 100%.

The car on the AC was waiting for the CCS so after 20 mins it started charging for 30 minutes, i went on the AC, then i got on the CCS for 30 minutes and i had enough charge to get home and spare incase of diversions.

This was all in wind, rain or drizzle but quite warm.     If the temp had been 10 degrees lower then the charging would have needed to be longer.

There were chargers that i could have paid to use and if working these would have been as expensive to use as buying and using the Petrol Car.

If the Charge Place Scotland infrastructure does not improve over this winter then i will be using a petrol or diesel on trips that i have passengers with me or that do not allow the lottery of charging and time needed to get charged or to search out chargers no matter how well planned in advance you are.

The Charge Place Scotland Map does not even show all the chargers correct location which is a total PITA if you are in an area you do not know.

Then the Call Centre is often not answering, the APP is not working often and you can not start a charge, it will show chargers available that are out of order or occupied.

Millions of public money is going to SWARCO / eVolt who are incompetent.   It is a Love in Between them and Transport Scotland, another incompetent tax payer funded

organisation.

The Scottish Government should be ashamed.

This Video was before the change over with SWARCO but SWARCO was already doing the job for BP / CPS.

Things are worse not better.

Using your Debit / Credit card can work now.

100 yards from McDonalds actually.

There is another CPS charge near, and another in Forfar other than the InstaVolt one.

This is from 2020.

It is the same now.

There are New Chargers installed and even operating and not on ZapMap or Plugshare or showing in the right place on the CPS Map / App and yet can be used.

SWARCO /eVolt Employees will sit charging cars while there are faults at chargers next to them and do nothing.

These are Maintenance staff not just office staff.

Now guess why those of us who can only afford 1 car are not convinced by EVs. ;)

Nice to get some balance from an ev adopter who isn't in full-time propaganda mode. 🙂

There are a few around who are so evangelical and preachy that they probably put more people off than they enthuse.

4/5 not going back is the way the data looks to me though, not surprised from California where air quality is such a big problem.

Those in Scotland who can afford an EV should be able to hire at affordable cost an ICE,  actually they can in much of Scotland, or in populated areas,

or if they can not afford an EV they should easily be able to leave their ICE and collect an EV to use maybe locally or in built up areas in Scotland from the thousands paid for by Tax Payers that are sitting unused by Local Authorities.

Covid has caused a problem obviously for where there are car clubs and cars to hire available.

There is another charger on CPS another mile on the A77 at Turnberry, it still does not show on ZapMap or Plugshare.

It was switched on and powered up for weeks yet never activated,

This Dowhill Farm Charger is 25 pence a kWh.

Hicups months later still with SWARCO,  the Vid showing the App is what you can get even with good reception on your phone.

I agree with this system. Almost like park and ride where you can take your ICE car to a specific point in the outskirts of an area and use an EV within said area, if I have interpreted that correctly.

On the subject of chargers, the only public chargers available are at the Police Station in Dalmellington, for the whole of the Doon Valley, might I add. I believe there's six. I don't have any other details on them, but EAC use them for the 'leccy vans and some of the staff at the Academy use them for charging their cars while they teach.
