Running in

Featured Replies

From what Ive heard from mechanics, running in is just a wives tale now, go and thrash it.

Although what you say is partly true because engines are made to higher tolerances, The last time I tried that with a new car, I ended up with a car that used almost as much oil as fuel, never again. I always follow the running in notes for the first 1k miles now and since then my octy RS has never needed any oil topup (variable servicing every 20k miles), this includes quiet a lot of track miles (10mpg).

I ran mine in by the book and it never used any oil between services. Mind you the engine did explode ater a meagre and very gently driven 120,000 miles :(

NO Comment :D

Even if some manufacturers reckon you dont need to run engines in these days, I would alwys take it easy for the first 1000 miles or so.

If only for my own peace of mind.

I was told by my dealer that running-in wasn't necessary...

Then i drove home gently and read the manual ;)

Anyone who tells you running in isn't necessary is talking out of their ****.

 tut, tut, naughty Skoda dealer!

There's a whole page dedicated to running in, in the Fabia handbook.

I think you'll find it's in almost every car handbook, even in these days of "factory run-in" engines...

Which is why i totally ignored what was said to me and followed the instructions in the handbook ;)

my thoughts are there is no real need to run in engines ie. stick to under 3000rpm but saying this a chap that asked me the same question the other day after purchasing a fab vrs "whats the running in period" my answer there isn't really a running in period but you have to be resonable about this don't redline it if you have to go over 3000rpm make it as short as possible for the first couple of thousand and you have just paid

3k rpm in a Furby vRS should see you leaving most other cars in a cloud of soot, and cruising along at a nice 115mph....

Some sort of running in!

Hence why I'd never buy an ex demonstrator or hire car, they never get run in properly.

And NEVER buy a Ford Direct used car which started life on the Ford Demonstrator Fleet. They are thrashed on delivery to and collection from those they are loaned to, and quite possibly by the customers who have them on loan too.
