Refuelling, how much fuel will your tank take?

Featured Replies

I've just refilled my Karoq 1.5 TSi for the second time after only ~360 miles. The fuel tank size, according to the manual, is 50L. however my first fill, when the gauge was showing red, was only 40L until the pump cut off. The second was ~39L with one bar above the minimum showing. The remaining range in the tank was 60 miles. Mpg from car and from the fill calculation come out at 41mpg. is, and is that 60 miles remaining range realistic? Do others get any more than 360 miles per tank?

Feeling brave (with a spare litre in the boot😎) I once pushed our 1.0 TSI 47 miles past '0' before giving up the challenge...........it took 51.05ltr to fill, I'm thinking there's got be at least 5 litres in the tank / available when the display shows '0'....?

That was 517 miles @ 46mpg.

I understand the fuel tank to be "about 50 litres for FWD cars, and about 55 litres for 4x4 cars, with about 6 litres left when the red light comes on.

Looking at my records, and usually filling the tank when it's down to around 50 or 60 miles range, over its first year the miles covered for each refill have gradually increased from 330 to 350 and the fuel needed to refill it gradually decreasing from 48.6 down to 43.5 litres. That's for lots of short shopping trips and few longer journeys each time, and for a 2.0TSI 4x4.

But at present I've just had two 100 miles trips and have covered 374 miles on the last tank full with a remaining range of 40 miles left in the tank.

My calculated fuel consumption has gradually improved from 31 to 36.5 mpg. (Note that the MySkoda App would have me believe I'm getting 38.6 mpg!! And when I refill the tank the car tells me I've got a range of 450 miles!!)

That is not bravery, I have run every tankfull for a minimum of 50 miles beyond "zero" on the MFD since 2005 and only ever ran out when I had a fuel sender problem. Octavia 1, Octavia 2 and Yeti, 200-250 thousand miles.

The range the display gives you when you refill is the range that you will get (and more) without running out if you drive in a similar manner, it is linear down to below 1/4 of a tank, about the time the fuel warning light comes on it starts cheating to create a reserve capacity of 5 litres or more (I reckon its more like 7) by knocking off remaining miles double quick.

Those who refill when the fuel light comes on are filling up are refilling their vehicles one extra time for every 3 (proper) fill ups, that adds up to a lot of time over 16 years but nothing to the time that we will be spending when we all dribe EV's.

OK, so today I drove another 8 miles to fill up (so 383 miles on a tankful), and refilled it with 50.5 litres. (4x4s have a 55 litre tank.) Car claimed 37.6 mpg, but calculated figure was 34.7.
