changing oil spec

Featured Replies

hi, my skoda seems to be designated to use 5w40 oil in UK..I have since traveled to eastern Europe, for the winter, and temps could get really extremely low (down to -25) would it be appropriate to instead use 0w40? Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, couldn't see it. Thank you

The 5w 40 Full Synthetic is to VW502 00 spec and for fixed service intervals.   Use 0w 40 Full Synthetic if you want.

You could use 5w 30 or 0w 30 Full Synthetic III (Long Life) if you want and do Fixed Service Intervals.

thank you

@conniebell   Is it 5w 40 that is in your 1.9TDI now ,

or are you just assuming it is as you say that is 'designated to use in the UK'?

When was the oil changed and was it not you that did it?

I have no idea whats in it at the moment, I just got the car prior to coming over here, (and it was serviced by previous owner) but its what was in my previous skoda in uk. I have no idea how to change oil, there are mechanics here but language is a bit of an issue so wanted to go buy off the shelf what I need to have to hand when i take it to get it serviced and winterized

Local drivers and mechanics should know what is what where you are.  As should Motor Factors.

If your engine is a PD type, the important part of roottoot's chart is circled here:

Using any oil that isn't rated to 505 01, or 507 00 will cause rapid cam wear on a PD.

@conniebell - Actually, @Wino has raised a very important point. Is your car a PD? If so it will have a badge TDi on the boot.
