HTP Vs TSI

Featured Replies

I can't make my mind up so asking everyone's opinions. I'm looking at 2 petrol Fabia's.

The first is a 2008 1.2HTP, the 2nd a 2010 1.2TSI 85ps.

With no experience in either of these (only had Diesels), which would you say will be the more reliable in the long run? Power isn't too much of an issue I managed with a Seat Mii 59hp for 2 years and 54,000 miles!

Cheers

I know power isn't your priority, but a TSI would definitely shift better and it's a newer car. It's all down to service history and condition at this point. :)

for me personally, if the 1.2 HTP is the 3 cylinder, they are inherently "rough" imo.............so the 4 cylinder 1.2 TSi would win all day for me.

As far as reliability, the earlier TSi's had or can have timing chain issues, so worth looking to see if it's been done or not, even if it has not, would still be my choice.

Don't have any experience to speak off regarding the HTP, but I will say this, I test drove several fabia's and Polo's with this engine before buying my Mk1 vRS and ALL off them

just seem rough on idle, just not smooth or balanced

Aye the 1.2 HTP does feel quite rough compared to other cars. Sounds good when you put the foot down, even if you don't move that quickly... :D

Brilliant thank you! I'm not sure on if the chain has ever been done so will check. 93,000 on the TSi and 110,000 on the HTP.

I do agree the HTP is a more chuggy engine but does sound good! 😂

even the reviews say you have to thrash the nuts of the 3 cyl.............our friend here is proof !!....

4 cylinder wins even more points 😁

Only if you want to keep up with faster traffic, like milk floats... :D

Seriously, it's good when the revs are kept high as you say. Keeping it in 1st-3rd around town is easy, and as long as you do 70mph dead on when travelling on motorways then it'll sit happy (I passed an A4 Avant with ease, funnily enough) and mine sees 45mpg on the M77 between Ayr and Glasgow. :)

I don't have experience with the htp or tsi, however I did have a mk2 fab with the 1.4 16v engine and it was very reliable, no trouble from it at all. In terms of power and torque it's a bit of a halfway house between the htp  and tsi so it's a bit more capable of higher speed driving. I also found the fuel economy to be excellent, getting 48mpg on the motorway. In terms of durability I would also rate it highly, I was regularly driving fully loaded, down gravel tracks and even did about 1000 miles towing a one ton trailer and it still does not burn any oil at over 100k miles (my brother has it now). I understand this doesn't directly answer your query but may be something to ponder.
