Audi TT front discs & caliper swap

Featured Replies

Hi, I've picked up some TT calipers (and carriers) for a 312 disc swap on my Mk1 VRS. Anyone got a part number of the discs for me? Will any Mk1 TT 180/225 8N discs do?

Thanks in advance.

As long as they're not for the quattro variant they'll fit, 4wd and 2wd brakes are different.

It's best to use 310mm front brake discs rather than 312mm front brake discs as they are improved.

310mm have a minimum thickness of 22mm, whereas 312mm have a minimum thickness of 23mm. So 3mm of wear allowed on the 310mm discs, but only 2mm of wear allowed on the 312mm discs.

310mm and 312mm front brakes discs are interchangeable as they cover the same build codes and ATE don't sell the 312mm version.

The Audi TT MK1 uses an ATE front brake system (calipers, carriers, etc.)

Thankyou both for your input!

Not quattro and ideally the 310's. Gotcha.

Make sure the calipers arent sticky from lack of use

I know this as I recently got involved with a V6 TT that had been abandoned outside behind a garage for 3 years !  Only reason was the tax is €1800+

A friend is restoring her and the calipers were basically junk so he done the decent thing and used them as exchange for a refurbished set - You want to see the timing belt but thats off topic !!

I was gonna rebuild with new seals after I had them powder coated.

A BMW Compact I bought a few years back had the pistons a good way out due to wear, the chrome was pitted on the one side and would only rust again so that had a new piston. The otherside was fine though.

Fron hoses were shot too mind you! 😛

Who/where is your supplier of choice for seals kits out of interest as I might replace the seals on my wife's 2015 Polo's rear callipers if they end up being sticky when I replace the pads next year?

That was what I used to consider to be the safe one, but I was reading about someone thinking that either their website had become not too handy, or their options for newer models seemed to be vague, so they had headed off to autodoc  and that worked out well.

01905428793 is their number, the site seems easy to navigate.

Are you ok?

Is the groan face a 'no' then?

Having now stripped my calipers and am sorting a shopping list it did occur to me that stepping up a disc size the existing dust shields are going to be now too small and bind.

It's not the best idea to remove the dust shields / splash shields so has anyone swapped on say some Octavia ones? I've looked through a couple of swaps and those people have just removed em.

Thanks :)

No need, your standard shields will be fine.

Oh they will fit. Good! Shame they're rusty! 😛  Would they Octy ones fit were I buying some new ones?

Probably.

Have been running mine without shields for years with 312mm discs on the front. shields rotted about 5 years ago.

I'll have to have a look at the state when I take the discs off. You should run them really, keep the dirt/muck/water off the discs.

Also here's a link of interest to anyone pushing their brakes for big stops like on a trip to "The Ring"

Granted the above is a pretty extreme example but you can see the job the dust shield can do with some ducting.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here.

With my 312s they do have proper sized heat shields but they're off some form of passat and were made fit. I had a mechanic fit them and left off new 288mm heat shields, he wasnt happy to fit them so kept them aside and put ones he found would work on. Would have just kept the original heat shields but they were stone rotten so needed changing anyway.

Still have the originals and the ones I bought sitting in a box of 288mm brake bits.

So, after a quick search, brake shields of a Volkswagen Passat B5 2001 - 2005 look like they're 312mm discs so maybe it's those. Interesting.

I hate to sound like Captain Obvious but why don't you just order a set of shields from a TT instead of yet another different VAG platform, at least the TT definitely has the same hub carrier which is why the brakes from it fit the Fabia.

What's wrong with using the standard cover plate?

I dunno, but any further input here is probably superfluous.

As long as they cover the bigger discs I'm stepping up to the what I've got should be fine, they're just a bit rusty! I'll find out when I come to fit the stuff. Just waiting on parts and the powder coaters to let me know the calipers are ready to be picked up. So I'll update when I've got some pics to show you!
