Honest opinions on E10 Vs the old E5 petrol.

Featured Replies

As above.  I've heard that there is some pretty bad press about E10, but I wondered if anyone could offer some real-world opinions on new Vs old.

I think I lose MPG on the new blend

You will lose a small amount of mpg yeah, I’ve noticed it also.

It's interesting that the govt don't discount the price of it since they've watered it down with bioethanol.

It's all fine and well saying it's less harmful, but if cars are using more of it due to it being less combustible, then what is the point

Some people are finding their car loves up to 5% more ethanol than they got with E5..

Now the E10 and E5 is Winter Spec in the UK until the end of March.   It might well contain less than 10% Bio in the E10 presently so that it is less hygroscopic.

Then with the likes of ESSO Synergy 99 ron superunleaded E5 there are regional differences to where there is up to 5% ethanol in the petrol.

The simple answer is if lose a few more mpg with E10, then probably loosing anything upto 15% compared to using E5 super unleaded, as super always gave 4-10 percentage points increase in mpg

Depends on price differential, but currently where I live there is a price premium on super unleaded of 12p or about 8% (which is less percentage than the lower mileage) so might be better off overall with the super unleaded.

I haven’t used the stuff in the 280 and will stick with Super 99. Nevertheless, it seems to be working fine in SWMBO 2003 Ford Focus 2.0, but it’s definitely affected the already abysmal 23 MPG but, it does only cover 3.5 miles per day!

I think you are mixing up with diesel, which goes waxy at lower temperatures.  They used to add Kerosene (jet aviation) fuel into it in winter, but nowadays use a chemical pour point depressant in winter spec diesel.

There is no need to add a PPD to petrol in UK, so don’t think a winter spec petrol exists.    However you are correct that bio-ethanol can absorb moisture (hygroscopic) over time, obviously the less air in tank the less moisture available (so full tank can’t absorb as much).

Diesel would freeze about -8c (without PPD) whereas petrol freezes nearer -60c

I can still get super at my local Sainsbury's for less than £1.5.

I'll probably just stick to that .

The 280 is a 98RON minimum anyway I believe.

I run a 220 which is a 95 minimum.

However, I'm fairly convinced it's happier on the dearer fuel

The interesting part of the spec is that it's up to 10%. That suggests it could well be the same e5 as supplied previously but with a bit more slack in the amount of E that goes into it.

Just my cynical view. Probably not true.

@SurreyJohn. I am not mixing up diesel and anti waxing and winter.  There is Winter Spec and summer petroleum.  Deliveries starting mid October in Scotland and north of England and then south as the month goes on.    Same as In Continental Europe and rest of world. Different times of year, seasons like for Australia.   The UK sometimes have stock coming in later into the spring as supplies are brought in from Europe and North America.   Maybe do some research and if you are stuck I can help you.   Less hygroscopic formulation with the winter petrol.   Try a Google.  'UK still buying winter gasoline as European refiners switch to summer.'.     People really seem not to know what they buy or use which is an issue when discussing what economy or performance they get from fuels.   Winter spec 97 or 99 Ron MINIMUM  super unleaded in the UK can be lovely and especially if it is 100 + Ron that came in from continental Europe where 100/102 is more available.

Skoda recommends all petrol engines run on 98 but like all the other petrol engines in the VW stable, the 280 will run without a problem on 95. I know it as fact, as I’ve had to use a couple of tankfuls in Scotland and Ireland where 98/99 isn’t available and it ran fine. It’ll also run fine on E10.

?where do skoda have 98 (95) on filler flaps?   They do on Fabia MK2 vRS.  Is it the same on a 280?    Where in Scotland is there not a Tesco, Esso, BP, Gulf, Texaco, Gleaner or Sainsbury with Super Unleaded ?   North of Inverness there are less but as long as a tank takes 10 gallons you will get by just fine.  VW do recommend 98 Ron for GTI,s and R,s.   Ignoring the fact that UK retailers stopped selling 98 Ron min when BP went from 98 min to 97 min and Shell went from 98 to 99 so the same as Tesco Momentum 99.  Now Esso super  is also 99 Min.

Yes, it’s in the same place on the 280. Says 98 (95).

The Esso garage on the A75 just outside Stranraer didn’t sell it, just 95 and the Morrison’s in the town didn’t have any of their Super 97 (I think it was) either.
Couldn’t find it anywhere in Northern Ireland and none in the South so stayed on 95. I’ve now got a few bottles of Redex octane booster which shoves 60L upto 97, which I’ll keep in the boot when we go there again.

They have E5 at Strantaer Morrisons now.

Eileanan Siar for one thing.

That is where the alcohol from the stills can be used.

Outer Hebrides for those that might need to do a search.

Fill up before getting on ferries and carry extra Super Unleaded if you want to be using full power on the roads...

Morrisons do their "Super Fuel" which is 97 RON, their Ayr garage does it on the two pumps closest to the air pumps. :)

That’s what and where I filled it before hitting the Cairnryan ferry to Belfast. I went to the Esso garage after I’d been to Morrison’s, as I thought Esso would have it. Went back to Morrison’s as their 95 was 5ppl less than Esso.

Good to know. Going to Portpatrick tomorrow so will probably have to get petrol in Stranraer. Thanks, George. :)

Thats interesting that the golf gti should request 98RON when it's the same unit found in my Superb 220tsi which states on filler 95 minimum.

It has made no difference to my Roomster. I have the detuned 86bhp 1.2tsi so it does not breathe fire. There is a roundabout about half a mile from me and I aim to get 36mpg (shown on display) by the time I reach it and I achieve that with the E10. My son lives 50 miles away and I still show 53mpg on the display when I reach him.

A tiny bit down on mpg on my vrs ,but otherwise it runs like a dream on e10 ,infact ive stopped using premium .

In the UK the petrol is 'Unleaded' (95 ron min) which is now E10

or 'Super-Unleaded' 97 or 99 ron minimum. The term Premium is usually a Diesel / Derv term.

Using Premium or Supreme as in a reference to Petrol as in this video is just a confusion.

I've read and heard that older naturally aspirated engines don't tend to like it so much and they suffer the most in terms of an MPG drop.

But I believe ethanol is good for turbo engines as it can reduce knock.

I've been using it in my car for over a year (since I got it) and also tried a couple of tanks of E5 but noticed zero difference in performance or MPG.
