New key and programming?

Featured Replies

Any recommendations for getting a spare key cut and programmed please? Been meaning to do it for ages, but you know how it is! 😂

I'm in the North East, thanks in advance.

The key part can be cut anywhere.....the encoding part has to be done at the dealer.

Thank you, I was hoping it wouldn't be dealer only, I'll see where my nearest one is and give them a ring. 👍

It doesn't need to be done by a main dealer, there are plenty of people who offer the service on E-bay.

Be aware though that they will be cloning your existing key, possibly a problem if it is to replace an original key that was lost or stolen as it could still open and start the vehicle, paying the main dealer price means the lost key could no longer start the car, if they do their job properly.

Mine was done on a Sunday afternoon by an Albanian who answered the door of what looked like a squat, he took my only key and dissapeared inside to cut it, it dawned on me that if he had broken into the house from the rear I was stranded and he had stolen my vehicle!!!!!

He came out after a few minutes with a couple of hand held devices to plug into the OBDII port, copy the immobiliser data from the existing key and program the chip on the cloned one, cost about £50 IIRC, a fifth of the dealer price.

Sounds like an interesting trip! 😲

I'm just waiting to hear back from my local VAG specialist, they say that they can probably do it.

I just has a quote for a replacement kessy key £380. Scandalous.

@broonaHi can I ask where you got this done please?

When I bought my car it only came with one key, not wanting to tempt fate, I got another one made up at Timpsons, albeit for £180 (!)

My wife has lost her key fob but has the spare, if she got a normal key cut off the fob, and used the door lock as normal would it also start the car?? or would she need the imobiliser fob as well??

It probably wouldn’t work, or at the very least set the alarm off as there’s no authentication

Wheres is the best place to get a replacment fob that works from ??

Not really as its simply a clone of the remaining key, the missing key(s) if its in the wrong hands can still be used to start the vehicle, paying the full on VAG price, not much more than the Timpsons rip off will render the missing keys unable to start the vehicle.

I paid £40 for a key cloned and cut to my existing one, guy on ebay.

Correct, it will open the door but set the alarm off  and not start the vehicle, alarm can only be silenced by the correct immobiliser chipped key.

For full security then a VAG garage, for the cheapest option an E-bay seller within driving distance from you.

I’ve got a 2021 Octavia with Kessy keyless start, need a new spare key. Main dealer want circa £450 for key and programming. Timpsons and another well respected auto locksmith can’t do it because it so new.
