Head units

Featured Replies

Hi,

I know there has been a various amount of discussion on here regarding different head units to give nav and dab, but I am confused as to the physical difference in the units between pre 2015 and post 2015. A lot of units say compatible 2009-2015. Is there a significant difference?

I am interested in a Kenwood upgrade to the info system as it uses Garmin which I am very familiar with.

But I am confused with a reply I got from a seller on ebay after sending the attached picture to them.

"Unfortunately if this is the Original Unit in the Car it is NOT Compatiable as you need to have "Media System" in the Car so this one's not correct and we don't have any other options for you."

Anyone know what "Media System" is?

Thanks

The quadlock connector changed from a 40 to 52 pin version, if that's your headunit, you'll have the 52 pin variant.

It might be worth adding which Kenwood you're hoping to fit?

There is a good chance your car supports Smartlink so you might also be able to get maps via CarPlay or Android Auto too.

Hi,

Many thanks for that.

It's second car, and only had it a day and then my sons car had to go in for work so he has had it for last two weeks. I will check out Android auto when I get it back at the weekend.

If not enabled is it definitively a dealer enable.

Regarding Kenwood, not sure which model will fit. Any that gives garmin would be good as long as not too ridiculous price wise. According to the seller on ebay the one I saw won't fit due to not having "Media System", but not sure what that is or if he is correct.

Any advice or info appreciated.

You didn't specifically ask but ... I changed the head unit on my 2014 Yeti for a Kenwood DNX518VDABS, so just some notes:

  • It's not a cheap option !
  • The old head unit was separate from the bluetooth, but the Kenwood has bluetooth built in
  • I needed an adaptor for the GPS cable that was already in the car because the connector is different.
  • There is no way to connect the old aux socket into the Kenwood
  • To connect the the existing car microphone requires soldering your own cable between the connectors on the quadlock and the phono in the back of the Kenwood
  • The touch screen on the Kenwood actually works for every touch !!.
  • Audio on the Kenwood is much better
  • Maps look better on the Kenwood
  • The navigation integration into the driver display has less info', and is generally less sophisticated e.g. it always tells you about the next junction even if it's 70 miles down a straight road
  • The Kenwood audio instructions for navigation are not so intuitive as the original - e.g. take one roundabout and the 2nd exit and as you take the exit the audio says something like "at the round about take the third exit", it's telling you about the next roundabout but you may be momentarily confused - the original satnav's instructions were never that ambiguous.
  • At roundabouts where there is a route straight across, or you can go around the outside for the other junctions the Kenwood always tells you to drive right around the outside even when you really want to go straight across.

Overall I like the Kenwood better but there are some points to think about.

The picture of yours above is the most up to date Bolero fitted to the Yeti and is indeed a "Media System"
Look at having Smartlink activated for about £150 to be able to mirror a smartphone that can then display Google maps etc.

Hi,

Thanks, pretty much what I thought so don't understand the sellers comment, but will investigate Smartlink.
