Coil light flashing and limp mode

Featured Replies

Hi

Recently brought myself a 2012 1.6 TDI green line to save tax and fuel but it's been a nightmare first week I had it drove a 1000 miles no problems then when returning from a 200 Mike trip coil light came on and limp mode turned engine off waited ten minutes then fine drove twenty miles and happened again called AA diagnosis injector no 4 drove home in limp mode then next morning started car up completely fine took it to a garage who said let's try new fuel filter and some cleaner and been fine for a month ,well until yesterday that is when it happen again now reading these forums this sounds like a common problem so much for VAG reliability I like the car but already feel like ditching it surely if the injector was faulty it would stay faulty , could be coilpack or connection or maybe a faulty 100 relay what are your thoughts

Thanks

At least that didn't rush you much. But all you know is that there is a fault. You can either guess, and guess again, and throw money at the car, or you can get the codes read and get an indication what the actual fault really is.

Well the fault as I said when the AA came was injector no four and reading threads on here that seems a common problem with people replacing injectors etc coil packs and still getting problems if I thought I could replace all injectors and have peace of mind I would but as I said many have done that without success

The diagnosis points to injector 4 but without the actual fault code it's anybody's guess as to the problem.

I would ensure the relevant wiring and connections are good before replacing an injector, I know the PD injector wiring plugs become loose over time and it's an easy fix but am not familiar with your engine.

Additional...

After a simple search on YouTube I see they are a doddle to work on, the original part was prone to failure and an updated version is available (possibly under warranty/recall), also see a simple way to electrically test the injectors and replace DIY.

You can safely ignore all that you have read about faulty coilpacks.

... .Because your car won't have coil packs. No diesel will.  The dash light is probably glow plugs but that won't be the underlying problem whilst driving

I was going to say something along the lines of the above two posts, but...

... My lad's BMW has a glowplug in the dpf which it uses when running a regen. Does the 1.6 use the same principle and that's why it came on on your long drive and has been intermittent since?

The model he has uses engine CAYC or a variant (check code on sticker in the boot)  which is a common rail unit. There is no glow plug in the dpf.

Some early versions had frequent failures of injectors but by 2012 there were superseded by an alterative make.

If the car has had the notorious emissions fix, then injector failure is the second most likely failure after EGR failure.

If the emission "fix" has been applied there will be small separate sticker in the boot showing 23R7, usually hand written.

You need to read the fault codes, we have a rapid 1.6 TDi CR and I think when our coil was flashing it was the EGR valve that req cleaning, I put a guide on here if you search the fault code.
