When i press the brake pedal to come to a stop i hear a noise coming from the engine or maybe the front wheels not sure, kinda like a knocking sound. Only a very quick and sudden noise but thought i'd mention it to see what you thought.

Sounds like it could be the ABS, what speed does this occur?

I have ABS on my Octy and don't hear anything. If the ABS kicks in you soon feel it through the brake pedel :S

How many miles has the car done?

How many times does it make the noise ? Constant knocking until you stop, just once, just before you stop etc.

57k my car has done and its just a single knock as soon as i apply the brakes at slow speed.

Sounds like it could be ARB (anti-roll-bar) link bushes to me, and at that mileage their failure is quite common.
