You should connect it to the switched live at the back of the radio.

I just tried this way today and also tried using my other stereo as well but still same results 😞

  • What radio did you have fitted?   If it's a non-skoda unit, then did you fit an amplifier before connecting the aerial cable to the stereo?   The standard radio has an amplifier bu

Where did you get the amp from?

The cable should be alright, but the aerial bases do fail. You can either replace them like for like, or get something more modern like an aftermarket sharkfin

I do have a sharkfin guess might be worth while loose connecting that up see if it is the aerial base if that yields no better results then guess its the main aerial cable gone poof.

It's impossible to imagine a scenario where the aerial cable has been damaged so I'd check the the new amp and the aerial itself if I were you.

I got the amp from the link which was posted earlier and I agree I cant see how the cable is damaged in all honesty. Im not sure how to really check the amp when I plug it into the back of both stereo,s there is a change in static so its trying to do something but still no proper reception. I will try the other aerial I have tomorrow and see if that helps out in any way first :)

My guess is it's a useless amp, a fiver including delivery isn't very encouraging when you get what you pay for but try swapping out the aerial first,  although a sharkfin will be even worse for reception strength.

I know what your saying but the average price was only 6 or 7 quid its not really much to it I've not even seen anything priced more than that to indicate better quality.

OK so little update fitted a better amp and the complete aerial and base has been changed for a new oe one decent quality but still not getting signal are there any sort of checks I can be doing on this please ???

Have you checked you are getting 12v at the aerial end of the aerial coax cable ?

  • Author

I won't get 12v eill I as I thought it was reduced ???

Should be 12v coming out of the aerial connector

Do you mean at the connector that plugs into the back of the stereo ???

No the connector coming from the radio  that connects onto the aerial base, that should have 12v between the centre conductor and the outer screen or ground

Must be honest this issue is doing my head in now lol.

I,ve tackled all the big jobs and small on this car with the help and advice of you guys and done them all but I just cant resolve this annoying issue no matter what I try and its doing my head in now grrrrr.

Did you check for voltage at the aerial connector yet ?

  • Author

no mate its hammering it down by me so cant get the trim off to get at the end connector yet.

OK so how do I test this socket with a volt meter please I'm assuming I have to have red probe on the inner prong and com on outer sheath  I was messing around with it today again and whilst I had hands on wires and amp got a great signal but as soon as I put it all back into its recess lost all signal.

Sounds like a bad earth, with the wiring using you as the earth. At least that's all I can think of.

Yeah disconnect the cable from the aerial base and on the connector for the coax from the radio, red test lead on the centre pin and black/common on the outer, if you don't get any voltage try the black lead to the car chassis the tailgate hinge points should be a good place, if you then have voltage the outer/screening of the aerial cable or the connector is at fault

ok so things just got worse lol I checked and was getting no voltage so pulled the stereo out and checked connections etc now all power has gone from stereo but ive checked the 10amp at back of stereo and also fuse 45 the 20amp at fuse board not blown changed in case but nothing stereo has no power.

  • Author

I tested at the fuse with volt meter and have power there.

  • Author

So this is how it happened as I was checking the wires at the back the wire I had spliced in for the aerial touched the chassis of the radio and all power went off to it. Ive checked fuses even the big one under the bonnet but none of them are blown and im getting power at both sides of the fuses. Im taking it that this may now be a wire short or fault created maybe ???

Just used a test light and im getting permanent live to the main power line into unit red/yellow but the yellow/red wire which is the switched live i believe im getting no power to it when ignition is switched on ???
