Replacement Front Suspension Spring

Featured Replies

2012 Superb MK2 4x4 170bhp CFGB

One of my front springs has broken and I've bought a replacement online which arrived today. I was asked for my vehicle registration when I placed the order. The spring I've received has the Part number NAPA NCS1114 on checking this doesn't fit my car and is for standard suspension? What is the difference between sports and standard suspension? My car has the larger 55mm diameter front shock absorbers.

The wire diameter from my broken spring is the same as the replacement and the top coil is the same. I'm a bit loathed to take the old spring off to find the new one doesn't fit as I can still use the car with care.

Is the front suspension really going to be different for the 2.0 170bhp CFGB AWD and FWD?

NAPA NCS1114 matches OEM part numberĀ 3C0411105C.

Ā

If you have a manual gearbox, this part fits your car.

Ā

The specification of NAPA NCS1114 is identical to KYB RH3559, so it was probably made by KYB and is simply rebranded to NAPA.

Ā

Sports suspension or lowered suspension means that the suspension is 15mm lower than standard.

Ā

Increased ride height suspension or heavy-duty suspension, means that the suspension is 15mm higher than standard.

Ā

OEM part numberĀ 3C0411105C is for standard ride height suspension.

Ā

Your front shock absorbers have OEM part number 3C0413031AS (as shown in your photo). This is a standard ride height shock absorber, so your car has standard ride height.

@DerbyshirebodĀ I know you said you were an "extreme tight arse" on another post

But surely your doing both front springsšŸ¤”

You wouldnt buy only 1 shoe if 1 was worn or would youšŸ˜‰

Ā šŸ˜…Ā This originally started off as an oil change, cam belt and water pump change last Wednesday, then the weather turned and we've had a fair bit of snow. So I decided to leave the car when I realised I also needed a new auxiliary belt pulley and also ordered a new spring for the O/S front and do it all at once. As I'm not needing to use the car every day at present

Ā

Yes I agree it is good practice to do both sides with matching springs. I spent several hours online it was a right headache trawling through countless listings to find which road springs were the correct ones for my car. There is quite a variation in price, I paid almost £28 for one spring and was unsure if it was the correct one? Now I know what the correct part number is I see I could have bought one for under £17.10 ! From the same manufacturer so I've ordered a 2nd one.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303720719228?epid=18034992792&hash=item46b72a637c:g:EQkAAOSw0ltfgReB

My last fixed term contract ended in October and thanks to covid aerospace engineering has been on its arse and I've not worked since then so funds are getting tight!

When I took the damper off to change the broken spring I found the damper couldn't have had much gas left in it as it was very slow wouldn't fully retract. I figured the other side would be the same after 182,000 miles (and later found it wasn't) so ordered 2 new front dampers for £61.99 which I didn't think was a bad price for pattern parts and are slightly different to the originals in as much you can't use the lower plastic cap which slides over the body to hold the dust cover.

Well in the end going from one broken spring this turned into a long old job! As I kept finding worn parts I kept ordering them. I should have just dismantled all the front suspension checked everything and ordered all I needed in one go!

Ā

Not unexpectedly I found one the top spring mounting was broken and decide to change both as I replacing both springs and dampers. Then found one of the lower ball joints while it might have passed an MOT was quite loose, so changed both. Found play in one of the drop link joints so changed both! The nearside track rod end had play so changed both!Ā

The inner track rod ends no longer hold themselves up but haven't got any noticeable play so have left them for now. A job for next year maybe?

Anyway the car now drives much better doesn't pull slightly to the right anymore and the suspension feels stiffer and doesn't have the wallowing feeling over undulating surfaces.

Not bad for just doing 1 coil springšŸ˜‰

The difference it makes should be great

The problem with suspension is it is very gradual wear and if you own the car for a long time you dont notice it and adjust your driving to it.

Then you change them and its a different car

I changed the front wishbone bushes to Polybushes this greatly improved handling
