'Clicking' noise from the engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

Got a quick question. Has anyone had any similar issues with the engine? There is that weird sound after the car engine warms up a little. I've attached two files for your to listen.

A mechanic ruled out ignition coils as when removing one by one there was no difference.

He mentioned that it could be fuel injectors though, which are very expensive and available from a Skoda dealer only.

I've tried some petrol system cleaner (Redex) but it didn't help.

It's Skoda Octavia 1.4 manual from 2013.

Thank you!

I cab hear it. Did the mechanic not have any ideas. It sounds like overhead running gear. Hydraulic tappets maybe. Question is it a characteristic or is it abnormal? May need another car the same to compare..

Apart from the fuel injectors he didn't mentioned anything else. It's definitely coming from the engine bay. The engine works fine (normal rhytm) for 5-10 seconds and then there is that 'jumpy' moment for 2-3 seconds when you can hear uneven engine work (revs are going up and down slightly, 1 mm arrow movement on the clock). Because of the engine's uneven work, it vibrates and you can see the engine moving slightly when the hood is open. When you are sat in a driver's seat you can feel vibration of the engine on the steering wheel. You can experience it all when the car is parked/neutral gear (or 1st gear, clutch fully pressed). When I stop on the red light, same thing, vibration, but when you drive faster, 2nd gear and higher, the revs are too high to notice this engine's uneven work.

I've looked at some Youtube videos with valve lifters noise examples and I have to admit that this is bang on the type of sound I can hear. I will check with my mechanic this week.

Thank you for the great suggestion!

The vibration may or may not be related. (i.e. could be a separate issue?)  Vibration often from mis firing even if only minor and at low revs could cause it  (say plugs or coil packs or fuel injectors). Or could be clutch / flywheel problems. If the missing is very minor it may not bring on the eml.  What is the miles on the car>?

The vibration started at the same time I discovered the tapping noise. The car is 'only' 50k miles. Is there any equipment that a mechanic could use that would confirm the reason (valve lifters/plugs/fuel injectors) without taking the engien apart?

The mystery solved.

Two spark plugs and one of the ignition coils we diagnosed to be faulty.

The plugs were split in half. It is unkown how they bacame so damaged within a short period of time.
