Totally Confused Over Correct Oil

Featured Replies

My son has a 2017 1.0 litre Octavia without a petrol particulate filter.  I have a 2018 1.0 litre Octavia with a petrol particulate filter.  My son's car is coming up for its annual service which we intend to do ourselves so I have been researching which oil to use.  Looking through this forum, Euro Car Parts and Opie oils web sites, I get the impression his car (without the PPF) needs 5w-30 spec oil to VW 504 specification.

Looking a bit further ahead, my car (with the PPF) needs 0W-20 spec oil to VW 508 specification at its annual service although 5W-30 oil can be used quite safely (this in itself is confusing).  Skoda dealers seem as confused over this and my local one can't even supply 0W-30 spec oil in 1 litre, 4 litre or 5 litre containers,

Are my assumptions above correct or have I misunderstood completely.  Please note we intend to service both cars annually.  Thank you.

VW504 00 /507 00 so 5w 30 FS is the recommended and correct oil for Fixed Services or Variable.  It is long life oil.

on the 2017 1.0 TSI.

(You can use 0w 30 FS III if to VW504 00/ 507 00)

VW502 00 is also the correct oil for Fixed Service intervals if you want to use that.

5w 40 FS.

The TSI cars from 2018 that left the factory with VW508 00/ 509 00 can use VW 504 00 / 507 00,

as they can use VW502 00 if getting fixed regime oil and filter changes.

Read this thread. The 1.0L engine is mentioned in one of the replies.

Just more confusion linking a Post /Thread about 'Best Oil'  Not the correct or recommended oil for a TDI where a member then posted about their TSI which left the factory with VW508 00 / 509 00.

There really is no need for confusion over the oil for TSI's pre or post GPF's.

Main Dealer Technicians or Fitters should know as should the parts desk people, but Service Desk Staff might well be clueless.

To add to the confusion my MY2018 1.4tsi Superb (no PPF) came with an old fashioned printed manual. Only reference to oil in it is this

To find out which type of engine oil you can use for your vehicle, contact a specialist garage. If this oil is not available, other oils can also be refilled. To prevent engine damage, a maximum of 0.5 l of engine oil with the following specifications may be used until the next oil change:

▶ Petrol engines: VW 504 00, VW 502 00, VW 508 00, ACEA A3/ACEA B4 or API SN, (API SM);

▶ Diesel engines: VW 507 00, ACEA C3 or API CJ-4.

Engine oil VW 505 01 can optionally be used in diesel engines without a DPF

My engine has a factory applied sticker on the slam panel

Bearing in mind that 508.00 is not backward compatible and the numerous warnings I've seen that it should not be used on engines that are not designed and specified to use it and the possibility of damage, I personally would stick to 504.00 on any car prior to MY19 unless there was some definite proof (e.g. a sticker as above) that it was ok to use 508.00

Also bear in mind that engines evolve and a MY19+ 1.0tsi engine may have had modifications that allow 508.00 use that the earlier version did not have. Changes will be more than just sticking on a PPF.
