What is a normal current drain

Featured Replies

My 2011 Superb 2 seems to have an excessive drain on the battery. The battery is a direct replacement for the original I think and is just 2 years old bought from and fitted by Halfords. in the past year it has had to be charged up overnight on a number of occasions to avoid the dreaded rapid clicking and no starting. Halfords have checked the battery with their little tester and it says its ok but needs charging and they will not replace it under the 3 year warranty if their machine says NO. They also say that there could be something drawing current whilst parked up and hence the problem. I would have thought the there must be some current being drawn as the alarm and locking and unlocking circuits and whatever magical stuff to keep the car alive must be active all the time.

Does anyone know what is a normal current drain assuming that the car is not running and all doors are closed and all lights are off?

Around 20-30mA, 0.02-0.03A I would expect, if all is well and everything is properly 'asleep'.

Slightly tricky to both get the car into that state and measure the current without re-awakening it.

There's a method I've described here that works, but it will be easier with two people as it's really a three-handed job:

Keeping the red meter probe 100% connected to the battery clamp while lifting it is the tricky bit, which a 2nd person could readily assist with.

Has the car got A Battery Control Module??

has it got the extra 2 wires coming from the negative lead like this video

Might be that car has not been recoded to new battery and alternator is not giving full charge as it still thinks its running with old battery
