Intake cleaning.

Featured Replies

Morning all, got my new to me Octavia the other week. I pulled the throttle body and EGR to give them a preemptive check and clean, and they were clogged to buggery. All spotless and sorted now, but the inlet manifold is horrendous.

So. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a manifold off job, anything I need to look out for/potential issues?

It's a 2009 MKII 1.9 BXE

Cheers!

If it ain't broke don't fix it...

It's a horrible job, one I wish I had never started. I used MrMuscle oven cleaner and various brushes. Ruined a reasonable pair of jeans, a nice T-shirt and a jumper plus my gardening shoes. Also had to paint a wall afterwards. Ruined a nearby golfing umbrella too.

Don't do it. It made not a jot of difference. Mine was a 2.0 BKD engine so a little revvier than the BXE.

I have full workshop access so it's not being done in the garden. And I have been a motorcycle and motorsport mechanic for the last 25 years. If it didnt look bad enough to need cleaning I wouldnt be lol. Ally work life has been high performance petrol, so my first diesel ever. More asking of there is anything peculiar to watch put for ie bits that require special care/attention. The car is a one elderly lady owner from new with 140K. Full service history but I dont think it was ever revved past 2K in its life. Throttle body was only 1/4 of its diameter when i popped it off for checking lol

Go for it then, plenty of videos on the tube if you want pointers.

Oven cleaner is commonly used as is a hot pressure washer with turbo type lance and if you're in a hurry and like fireworks setting fire to the carbon and blasting compressed air through it works wonders.

@Matbloke yes do it, otherwise it's still SISO (as in computer GIGO, garbage in, garbage out).  Sorry I've no idea what's best to use but I would be interested to know your results if you want to report back.

If you can, get the lady to use a 'clean' diesel like V-Power as it can make a difference after all your cleaning and proper servicing.  Keeping the fuel tank above about a quarter will help with regen when someone takes it for an Italian tune up.

Might be telling Grandama how to suck eggs but even though it's about DPF the following sum's up the dirty diesel situation (add on air filter changes).

Thanks for the reply. The car is mine now so once it's done it should stay good. My daily commute is about 75 miles, mostly motorway so it will never get used for short town runs so that should keep it clean.

We used to use the fireworks route clearing out 2stroke expansion chambers, they light up like scram jets! 😂

One of our clear outs a few years back. RS125 that was running so badly we had to remove the Reed blocks and turn the bike upside down to drain the fuel and oil out of the cases 🤦‍♂️
